I'm having a seriously tough time imagining myself learning Photoshop from a book these days. But if I had to, I would want it to like this Something really beautiful, where the example images are chosen with intention and taste. Type is a considered design element. It's something I'd want to keep and not throw away. Non-Photoshop people could pick it up and flip through and still feel inspiration. The techniques are foundational and won't be made obsolete by upgrades. So, could it be a quasi-coffee-table book and still teach? Is that even possible?! I dunno. 99% of Photoshop books are built like user manuals for off-brand furniture instructions, or Ranger-Rick craft projects (no-dis to Ranger-Rick, I heart you). I don't like tutorials that use uninspiring images for good instruction, it's a disregard of form for function. I think we're over that. At least in book form. I learn mostly from youtube, of course, just like you. Premiere Gal and Valentina V teach me to edit video every day. So many others, too many to name. I want to believe that printed hold-in-our-hands books are still valuable for learning our digital crafts. I have fewer answers than questions. Maybe you can help me out on this one. *LEARN TO PHOTOSHOP EASILY* What am about sharing with you is something I wished I knew earlier and practiced. Many designers today are shying away from using this powerful design tool. Simply because someone told them it was difficult or they concluded it was difficult at first sight of the interface. Yes I was once like you tho, all I could do is BG removal. But in year 2021 I came across crazy design visuals and I was like its time to upgrade my knowledge because I knew I was designing nonsense. I began searching for online courses I could lay my hands on, I was kind not looking for scattered teachings because I wanted a good background on graphics design. I came to know about Udemy, I searched for design courses with Coreldraw as the tool, Omo I searched tire but I was seeing obsolete courses, checked skillshare etc. Same issues. All I could see is Adobe software courses. So that how I started using Adobe illustrator first before I now learnt Photoshop as well. I could remember I was literally crying 😭 with a lot of tears just because I found it very difficult to understand any of the tools. But I decided in my mind that I would know this tools no matter what. I began taking different courses both paid and free, YouTube was my best spot for Freebies while I Udemy was my plug for paid stuff. How I Learned Graphic Design Online Without Feeling Overwhelmed Learning anything online can be tiring, especially if you're working, studying, or doing both. It’s not easy to discipline yourself to sit for hours learning. For me, I get tired unless I'm watching a movie. lol🤭 As a beginner in graphic design, the first thing you must know is the principles and elements of design. You should understand these basics before learning any graphic design software or application. One graphic designer who helped me understand these principles very well on YouTube is David Gareth. I'm not going to give you many names because, as a beginner, you don't need confusion. What you need is direction and focus. As you advance, you can explore more. When it comes to learning different design software like my favourite, Photoshop, what helped me was watching short design videos on platforms like Instagram and YouTube. Long videos can be tiring unless they don’t miss any steps. Those missed steps can drive you nuts. lol 😬 HERE ARE SOME TIPS TO MAKE LEARNING LESS STRESSFUL Download the short videos: This way, you can pause and slow down when necessary. Replicate and Practice: Replicate what you watch to master it. Take Short Breaks: I do refresh my mind by listening to music or playing a games like Township or Solitaire before continuing. Have you ever been given a recipe by a friend that assumes you have more cooking or baking experience than you actually do? Or, make a butter flake pie crust and press it into a spring form pan, and you’re left searching for a pie crust recipe and the right pan? Skipping steps can be helpful when you know some basics. But, what about when you're just starting out? When everything seems a bit foreign, and new, and sometimes even a little intimidating. For a beginner, it's a great relief when steps are clearly articulated. Many years ago, when I was first learning graphic design and Adobe Photoshop, every tutorial seemed to assume that I had a working knowledge of design tools. It was a given that I knew how to crop, rotate, and magnify an image before day one. This often created a lot of confusion and backpedaling for me. That's just one of the reasons why I started Bright Brush Academy, with introductory graphic design and Photoshop courses that are truly at a beginner's level.
