The Korean writing system (called Hangul) is unusual, as rather than developing over time, it was invented in the mid-15th century, and it was designed with simplicity in mind. Prior to the introduction of Hangul, Chinese characters were used to write Korean, and written Korean was structurally different to the spoken Korean language. In an attempt to increase literacy, King Sejong the Great introduced this new writing system which had a new and straightforward alphabet. Today, modern Hangul is comprised of 24 basic letters (14 consonants and 10 vowels); these can also be combined to make complex letters. There is an explicit connection between the shape of each letter and its pronunciation, helping to make Hangul intuitive to learn and use.
