This week is Road Safety Week, with this year’s focus aimed at championing the people who take care of others post accident. At Fincher Utilities Ltd, our vehicle road safety policy is essential for ensuring the safety of employees, and promoting a culture of responsibility within the company. By setting clear guidelines on safe driving practices, vehicle maintenance, and driver behaviour, our policy helps prevent accidents, minimise injuries, and protect both drivers and other road users. This week will see us stress the importance of the following safety measures to all drivers: • Following signs and instructions: Drivers should follow the directions of traffic controllers and signs. • Slowing down: Drivers should slow down and always consider the safety of others. • Being aware of pedestrians: Drivers should be aware of pedestrians and be aware of crossing points. • Being aware of road workers: Drivers should be aware of road workers and slow down through the works area. • Recognising barriers: Barriers are used to separate, road workers, pedestrians and vehicles. • Follow markings: Markings are used to separate road workers, pedestrian and vehicle routes. #RoadSafetyWeek #DriveSafe #RoadSafetyAwarenes #SafeDriving #PedestrianSafety #SaferRoads #fincherutilities

Kenya's Road Safety Crisis: A Multifaceted Problem Kenya has witnessed a worrying rise in road accidents since the beginning of the year. Reckless driving behaviors are a major contributing factor. 1. Unqualified drivers: Many drivers exhibit behaviors that raise serious concerns about their driving education. They disregard traffic laws by overtaking on corners, driving on the wrong side, and ignoring road signs. 2. Impunity for the privileged: The situation is exacerbated by a sense of impunity among some politicians and government officials who believe their status exempts them from traffic rules. These violations come at a heavy cost, with many lives tragically lost. 3. Young and reckless drivers: A segment of young, affluent drivers, particularly those owning Subarus and SUVs, exhibit dangerous and arrogant behavior on the road, sometimes traveling in groups to intimidate other motorists. 4. Speeding truck drivers: The allure of faster trips and higher pay incentivizes some truck drivers, especially those operating newer, high-powered vehicles, to engage in dangerous speeding and racing. 5. Inconsiderate Matatu operators: Probox, minibuses, Vans are notorious for aggressive driving and a disregard for the right of way and other traffic rules, further contributing to the chaotic and dangerous road environment. Addressing these multifaceted issues is crucial to curb the rising tide of road carnage in Kenya.

Trucking in Extreme Conditions: Navigating the Perils of the Road Truck drivers are a breed apart. They pilot massive vehicles across vast distances, braving whatever weather conditions Mother Nature throws their way. From scorching deserts to icy mountain passes, these challenges demand exceptional skill, resilience, and a deep understanding of how to handle a big rig in extreme environments. The Challenges of the Road: Heatstroke and Dehydration: Soaring temperatures in desert regions can lead to heatstroke and dehydration for drivers. Trucks can also overheat, causing breakdowns and delays. Blizzards and Icy Roads: Blizzard conditions with near-zero visibility and treacherous roads pose a significant risk of accidents and getting stranded. Maneuvering a heavy truck on ice requires extreme caution and specialized winter driving techniques. High Winds and Downpours: Strong winds can buffet a truck, making it difficult to control. Heavy rains can lead to flash floods and washed-out roads, hindering progress and potentially causing accidents. Mountainous Terrain: Steep inclines and sharp declines on mountain roads test the engine's power and the driver's skill in navigating tight switchbacks. Harsh winter conditions can exacerbate these challenges. Remote Locations: Breakdowns or accidents in remote areas can leave drivers stranded for extended periods, with limited access to help and resources. Solutions for Safe Navigation: Trip Planning and Weather Monitoring: Careful route planning that considers weather forecasts and potential hazards is paramount. Staying updated on real-time weather conditions allows drivers to adjust their routes or delay travel if necessary. Proper Vehicle Maintenance: Regular maintenance is crucial for ensuring the truck is in top condition to handle extreme weather. Winterizing the vehicle with proper tires, fluids, and emergency supplies is essential for cold weather travel. Safe Driving Practices: Slowing down, increasing following distances, and maintaining proper tire pressure are crucial for safe driving in all conditions. Defensive driving techniques are essential for anticipating and reacting to hazards. Rest and Hydration: Drivers must prioritize adequate rest to avoid fatigue, especially during long hauls in extreme conditions. Staying hydrated is vital to prevent heatstroke and maintain focus. Communication and Emergency Preparedness: Carrying a charged communication device and having a plan in case of emergencies is essential. Staying in contact with dispatchers and knowing what steps to take in case of a breakdown or accident can make a big difference. #Trucking #Freight #Logistics #Transportation #TruckersLife #SemiTruck #BigRigs #TruckDrivers #Hauling #Delivery #18Wheeler #TruckLife #FreightTransport #TruckStop #OTR #TruckMaintenance #TruckSafety #TruckRoutes #Cargo #TruckTechnology

Remember that driver rest plays a critical role in ensuring road safety. Fatigue can significantly reduce concentration and reaction time, which in turn increases the likelihood of accidents. Therefore, it is very important to organize regular breaks for drivers so that they can recuperate and focus on driving. Monitor the condition of drivers, taking into account their physical and emotional well-being. Psychological tension and stress can also negatively affect their performance. Creating a comfortable working environment and maintaining open communication will help reduce stress levels and improve the overall well-being of employees. In addition, it is important to set clear work schedules that take into account the need for rest. Avoid overloading drivers with long trips without stopping. Remind them of the importance of observing the work and rest schedule. Following these recommendations, you can significantly improve the level of transportation safety and reduce the risks associated with work on the road. Healthy and rested drivers are the key to successful and safe cargo transportation. #roadsafety #driversafety #fatigueawareness #driverwellness #transportationhealth🚚

Q: What percentage of fatalities on UK roads involve people driving for work? a) 9% b) 19% c) 29% If you guessed 29%, you're correct. According to Highways England, nearly one third of all road deaths and 21% of all casualties are the result of driving-for-work collisions. This means over 20 fatalities and 250 serious injuries occur each week involving a working driver. It's a shocking statistic, and highlights the very real need for fleets to continually prioritise road safety training amongst their drivers. This is especially true when you consider that it is human error - and oftentimes, bad driving habits - such as tailgating, braking sharply, speeding, being distracted, or being careless that account for over 90% of all RTCs. In our latest blog post, we've rounded up the driver safety stats that every fleet manager needs to be aware of - as well as the simple changes that drivers can make to reduce fleet risk and help keep themselves and other road users safe.
