Day 1 at KPMG complete! ✅
Today marks the end of my first day at KPMG under their One+1 Shadowing placement; an opportunity that allows me to shadow professionals who work in a variety of industries under KPMG, ranging from the varied services that they offer such as audit, tax and advisory.
Upon my prompt 10:00am start today, I was first given a tour of the modern and sleek building, situated in the heart of Canary Wharf. I was able to explore the different aspects of the building, mainly exploring the company’s Ignition Client Area, which is a creative area where meetings are able to be held in an interactive and creative way with external clients.
This creative and unique space was something I never expected to find under a financial services company school as KPMG - the focus of creativity and expression of the self was an interesting aspect to delve into. To express our creative mindset, we were told to engage in art related activities - an activity they surprisingly do with even the most senior employees under the company!
I was later able to gain insight into the world of management consultancy under a graduate in the industry. I was taught, in great detail, the specifics of the industry, such as the importance of knowing the contract and how to handle client conversations.
Learning about the departments of consultancy provided under KPMG such as supply chain consulting, sustainable consulting and procurement consulting was also especially interesting, as it made me realise how varied the field was.
We also learnt about the different technologies that KPMG use in order to efficiently manage their consulting team and their importance, as these efficient technologies help the department run in a smooth and orderly manner.
After lunch, I was able to attend meetings where I learned about the operations of KPMG with its clients. These meetings were especially interesting as I was able to see the efficient strategy that projects under KPMG are approached with, and the shared sense of effort that the employees share between each other.
As my last session of the day, I was able to see the development of financial technology, starting from the 1990’s where money was primarily handled by either cash or cheques, to the development of newly emerged online banks. Seeing the development of the financial world, and learning about financial crisises such as the 2008 stock market crash was particularly interesting, as it was fascinating to see the impact of technology in the world of finance, and to speculate how it could develop in the future.
Day 1 under KPMG was such a success - I can’t wait for what I will learn tomorrow! 🤩
