OK, we've all had a good hoot and holler about the #gemini chatbot's racially diverse Nazi soldiers. But Google's screw-ups actually provided a huge public service. Let my colleague Clive Crook explain: [[The laughable screw-ups in the Gemini chatbot’s image-generation — racially diverse Nazi soldiers? —offered a salutary glimpse of an Orwellian dystopia. And in so doing, they also highlighted vital questions of opacity, trust, range of application, and truth that deserve more attention as we contemplate where AI will lead.... Even if errors could be reliably identified and counted, the criteria for judging the performance of AI models are unclear. People make mistakes all the time. If AI makes fewer mistakes than humans, would that be good enough? For many purposes (including full self-driving) I’d be inclined to say yes, but the domain of questions put to AI must be suitably narrow. One of the questions I wouldn’t want AI to answer is, “If AI makes fewer mistakes than humans, would that be good enough?”]] Lots to chew on here about #AI and where it will lead. Give it a look. https://lnkd.in/eCvrV5pW

Is this a failure in RAG or a failure in hyper-parameter optimization? Perhaps both. For me, this demonstrates the importance of controlling the temperature parameter of an LLM. Some tasks require creativity. But with creativity can come hallucinations. So in the cases where we expect a purely and solely factual response, the temperature really has to be dialed down. I’ve seen so many posts online about engineers complaining that a particular LLM is not intelligent. And then they realized all they needed to do was turn the temperature down. It’s entirely possible that the system that Google has built here is truly impressive under the hood. But if you have chosen the wrong hyper-parameters, it doesn’t matter. This is why it is critical to test the landscape of hyper parameters as part of their online A/B testing process.
Google has managed to scale hallucinations. Despite months of testing before release, users of Google’s new “AI Overviews” have found loads of hallucinations (some potentially harmful). While this was inevitable, it does highlight some of the key flaws of RAG, which was ironically designed to reduce hallucinations: - Presenting all sources equally to an LLM, which is typical in most RAG systems, leads to gross misinterpretations. - Satire and irony is often only obvious with much broader context making it very difficult for an LLM to detect in an augmented generation setting. This feature has been very poorly received in general. Pulling off huge horizontal AI integrations is extremely challenging, even for Google.

A quick recap on #Google Search powered by #GeminiAI. This is the "quality" of one of the biggest companies out there applied to their biggest and most profitable product, Search, which in turn powers #ads. Yet the level of hallucinations is so high we should question if we can use Google at all to ask those questions. And Alphabet CEO has recently said it has no idea how to fix #GenAI hallucinations. Damn interesting.

Google's AI, Gemini, recently faced a hiccup, painting a vivid picture of what happens when innovation races ahead without a thorough check. This oversight led to a $90-billion drop for Alphabet, shining a light on the fine line between advancing fast and ensuring accuracy. CEO Sundar Pichai admitted the missteps with Gemini, which made headlines for generating historically inaccurate images and answers. This ranged from altering history with an Asian founding father to misjudging the impact of figures like Adolf Hitler and Elon Musk, sparking widespread debate. This situation reveals more than just a technical glitch; it shows a hurried push to stay ahead in the AI game, sometimes at the cost of reliability. Google's rush led to overlooked errors, sparking a conversation about the balance between innovation and the integrity of our digital narratives. 🌱 A Moment to Reflect: As Google works to mend Gemini, the bigger task is regaining trust. It's a reminder for all in tech: moving fast is exciting, but moving wisely builds the future we all believe in. What do you think is the key to balancing innovation with accuracy in the world of AI? #AIethics #Technology #Google #InnovationWithCare
