This is an intriguing story. Earlier, I spoke with a colleague about an insurance loophole discovered by someone in the SUD community, which became a nightmare for the uninformed. And that isn't the first time we have heard this story. I've certainly observed remarkable ingenuity in this field; however, it's not always employed for benevolent purposes. I believe there are many geniuses akin to Elons of healthcare amongst us —we have the capability, the passion, the determination, and indeed, the financial resources. Peter Njongwe's innovative approach to healthcare through ObenHealth is a game-changer. After losing his brother to heart failure, Njongwe founded Oben Health to tackle hypertension in a unique way: by bringing healthcare screenings and education to barbershops and salons. These trusted community hubs, especially in communities of color, offer a familiar and supportive environment for people who might otherwise struggle with access to care. Oben Health uses AI to enhance this model, integrating data to improve patient care and support. This outside-the-box thinking not only bridges gaps in healthcare access but also empowers local barbers and salon workers as community health advocates. Njongwe’s vision is a powerful reminder of how creative solutions can transform healthcare and make a real difference in people’s lives.

Thanks Amanda Sheppeard for covering this. Lack of funding for HITH models is a big barrier to innovation that would save the health system $$. Health Services Daily Current funding models do not provide private hospitals the comfort necessary to invest in at-scale HITH services. Where services exist, they are piecemeal. “The only practical option to broadly unlock the patient and financial advantages of HITH in the private sector is a default benefit to incentivise investment from providers, and a willingness to contract from insurers.” According to economic analysis of existing hospital activity and cost data commissioned by CHA, a default benefit of $330 per day would be sufficient to incentivise investment and contracting for HITH from hospitals and insurers across a range of in-scope conditions. #hith
