🥼 From Academia to Industry: Bridging the Gap! 📊 Ever felt overwhelmed translating your academic journey into industry terms? I’ve been there! Let me share my experience: When I first started applying for industry jobs, I struggled to translate my extensive PhD and postdoc projects into industry-relevant terms. It was a daunting task, but I learned a few things along the way. Here’s how I did it: 🔬 During my PhD in Bioengineering, I developed a proprietary contrast agent to enhance early-stage tumor imaging. Initially, I had no idea how to position this in the job market. After a day of scratching my head and feeling like an absolute baboon, I realized that contrast agents are classified as drugs by the FDA. Voila! My PhD was in drug development and pre-clinical testing! Then came the big question: Which type of scientist position do I qualify for? This was a tough one, but here’s how I broke it down: 1. Formulation/Biomaterials Development Scientist:   - Designed and synthesized drug formulations.   - Worked with colloidal systems (LNPs, polymeric particles) in various forms (liquid, solid, oral). 2. Bioconjugation Scientist:   - Conjugated validated targets using various bioconjugation techniques.   - Purified formulations using SEC, IEC, HPLC, TFF etc.   - Validated targeting with IF, ELISA, and cell-based assays. 3. Analytical Scientist:   - Created SOPs and workflows for numerous analytical techniques (FTIR, UV-Vis, GC, SEM, and more!).   - Developed a DLS-based diffusion assay for enzyme-coated nanoparticles. 4. Pre-Clinical Scientist:   - Designed and studied the PK/PD of the drug in mice models. 5. Technology Transfer, Market Research and Commercialization:   - Gained skills in product-market fit studies, market analysis, identifying business needs, and regulatory pathways. So many skills, so many roles! 🎓 🔄 Looking back, my journey is a true testament to the diverse skill set you can develop during a PhD. Now, please can I find a job where I do everything and get paid significantly more? 😂 So, remember! Your academic experience is invaluable!
