Beginning my career in the nonprofit sector, this topic is near and dear to my heart. Because success is defined differently in nonprofits, managing performance will look different, too. These teams tend to run leaner, with an emphasis on measuring impact and maintaining internal sustainability, or in other words, higher employee engagement and retention. The secret to retaining talent in a nonprofit: A fantastic onboarding program. Most employees know within their first week whether or not they’ll stay with your organization. Here are four things you need to do during onboarding to keep your people around: 1. Warm welcome: Make the newcomer feel like part of the team instantly. Organize a welcome meeting, introduce them to the team, and schedule one-on-ones so they get to know everyone’s role in the organization. 2. Make sure they understand the mission: Ensure they truly understand the cause. They have joined you not just for a job, but because of a shared passion. 3. Exposure: Allow them to experience different roles within the organization. It is not uncommon for one person to take on the responsibilities of several roles in a nonprofit. Help them to become adaptable. 4. Training and goal setting: Set up a plan for training and set goals for the coming months.
