"Historically, PR, Marketing and Advertising budgets are the first to be cut; however, that could be one of the first mistakes a business makes in an economic crisis." - CBS Marketwatch We often see a knee-jerk reaction to cut corners where it's easiest during tough times: PR, marketing, and advertising. In understanding nonprofits' unique challenges, it's important to recognize that this approach might seem practical in the short term but can overlook these vital organizations' deeper, long-term needs. Bottom line? It’s easy to play it safe and cut costs where it seems least painful. But for nonprofits, staying visible and engaged is essential. It’s about being strategic, not just frugal, and ensuring every dollar you spend on marketing works as hard as possible for your cause. ----------------------------------------- Are you looking to elevate your PR strategy and make a lasting impact? I help nonprofit brands build brands and campaigns that turn passive supporters into active advocates.
Communications is the engine. Marketing is the car. I see so many nonprofits prioritize Marketing over Communications and believe me, I get it. Marketing is flashy. It’s all cutting edge technology and emerging channels. It’s sending your colleague a cool video that a competitor just put out and saying: “Why can’t this be us?” And communications is, well…..just words. BO-RING! BUT…imagine you are tasked with building a car. And in that car you put all the latest features and gadgets. It looks impressive, it turns heads, but when you lift the hood there is no engine. No matter how sleek the exterior, without a powerful engine, the car won't get far. So the next time you are building a campaign or thinking about adding a new Marketing channel to your mix, build your engine first. Here’s a simple checklist to keep in mind: ✅ Ownable: If another nonprofit doing similar work can put their name on your key message. Scrap it. ✅ Concise: Everyone has the attention span of a chickpea. Keep it short and sweet. ✅ Clear: Write your message like you are talking to a friend. People should get it the first time they read it. ✅ Impact: Show how your organization is building a better future. Remember: Good marketing might get people through the door, but it's good communications that will keep them engaged, inspired, and ultimately, committed to your mission. #nonprofits #nonprofitconsultant #nonprofitmarketing #brand #communications #nonprofitleader #executivedirector

Shrug, Hug, Connect: A Communications Model This came to me in a dream last night. See if it wakes you up, too. When folks first encounter your work, they shrug. So what? Why should I pay attention to what this nonprofit does? As a multichannel communications engine, you inform the skeptic. You share info about your programs and your outcomes. You capitalize on what little you know about them, like what got their attention in the first place. You engage them: Maybe a poll. Maybe a survey. Maybe a petition. Maybe an advocacy email for them to send to the mayor or a state representative. With your savvy welcome and engagement journey, they embrace your work. You've moved them to the hug. It's time for your natural curiosity about people to emerge. You work toward a deeper relationship. Maybe you start sending handwritten notes. Maybe you invite them to an event. Maybe to a volunteer opportunity. Maybe to a tour. Maybe to a Zoom meeting. Maybe to a lunch. They seize on what interests them, and you two connect. Congratulations! You've moved the person through shrug and hug to connect. Now, I don't want to be a pollyanna. This takes time and attention, and maybe cash. Your reward, your payoff, your ROI, is you will have converted someone to a loyalist for your work.
