Happy🎉🇨🇦 🎉Canada 🎉🇨🇦🎉Day, 🎉🇨🇦🎉 Happy Canada Day! Today, we celebrate Canada's 157th birthday and its rich tapestry of cultures and opportunities. Canada stands as a beacon of multiculturalism, being the first country in the world to adopt it as an official policy in 1971. This commitment was further solidified with the Canadian Multiculturalism Act in 1988, enshrining diversity as a fundamental Canadian value The nation celebrated Canadian Multiculturalism Day, honouring the numerous cultural communities that contribute to Canada's vibrant society. This day serves as a reminder of the country's dedication to equity, inclusion, and mutual respect. Canada's diversity is reflected in its history and present. From Indigenous peoples who built thriving cultures, to immigrants from around the world who have shaped the nation, Canada's story is one of many voices. The country's immigration system, reformed in the 1960s, opened doors to people from diverse backgrounds, particularly from Asia, fundamentally changing Canada's demographic landscape. As we celebrate today, let's appreciate the opportunities Canada offers and the collective strength derived from its multicultural identity. It's a day to reflect on the past, celebrate the present, and look forward to a future where diversity continues to enrich the nation.

What did Canada Day used to be known as pre-1983? Today, July 1st, marks the anniversary of Canada’s confederation in 1867 when three British colonies - Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and the Province of Canada (later to become Ontario and Quebec) - united to form the 'Dominion of Canada'. Originally called ‘Dominion Day’, the holiday was renamed as ‘Canada Day’ in 1982, seen as a modern shift away from colonial-era terminology. The interesting difference between a ‘colony’ and a ‘dominion’ is that the latter has attained a degree of self-governance whilst remaining loyal - in this instance - to the ethos of the British family, or Crown. Functions of the Crown in the Dominions are not undertaken personally by the sovereign but by a governor-general, appointed by the sovereign (Oxford University Press). Mary Simon is the current governor general of Canada, and is the first Indigenous appointment to the role. She became the 30th governor general of Canada on 26th July 2021. CELEBRATIONS As with many celebrations around the world, fireworks play a central role, with people gathering in parks and waterfronts across the country to see the night skies light up. Many Canadians dress in the national colours of red & white, attending parties and cultural activities, which may include historical reenactments (Halifax) or Indigenous ceremonies (Winnipeg). According to website ‘Ramblyn Jazz’, the day brings mixed feelings amongst Indigenous cultures, due to historical injustices. Though Indigenous communities frequently do use the day to showcase their cultures and contributions to Canadian life. In Montreal, where I spent two-years, this year’s main event will be a family focussed affair in the Old Port of Montreal, which is a fun and vibrant part of the city, full of bars, restaurants and a zip wire for those feeling more daring. In addition to the main celebrations at the Old Port, various Montreal neighbourhoods organise their own Canada Day events. For example, Pierrefonds-Roxboro on the opposite shore of Montreal island, hosts a parade, amusement park, and fireworks. 🇨🇦 October: Latin American Heritage Month in Canada 🌎 In 2018, the Latin American Heritage Month Act legally named October "Latin American Heritage Month" in Canada, recognizing the significant contributions of the Latino immigrant community to Canada’s social, economic, and political scene. 🎊 This month, Canada planned many events to commemorate and celebrate the heritage Latino immigrants have built. These include ceremonies, parades, speeches, and many more. How does the Latino community mark Canada? 🔹 In 2021, over half a million people identified as Latin American in Canada. This community represents an important pillar of the country. 🔹 Many served in the First and Second World Wars, some even coming voluntarily to enlist in the Canadian military. 🔹 Since then, Latinos across the continent have brought their unique culture and adaptability to a new home, showcasing resilience and strength. 💡 Each year, Immigration & Mobility helps countless clients from Latin America immigrate to Canada. We are proud to help them achieve their dreams of moving to a country celebrating their efforts and heritage. Could you be next? Today as we celebrate National Indigenous Peoples Day, we reflect on the many contributions Indigenous people have made to Canada. As an organization and as individuals, we recognize and respect: - The diversity of Indigenous cultures and worldviews and their roles in Canada’s past, present, and future. - Our collective responsibility to share natural resources revenues and close gaps in socio-economic conditions between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people. - Our role in the journey towards reconciliation by advancing Indigenous knowledge systems in all our work. - Our privilege to live, work, and play on Indigenous land.
