ISRAEL’S LONG WAR by Cliff May Blog excerpts: "The war Hamas launched against Israel on Oct. 7 is unlikely to end soon." "Hamas is still firing missiles. It still has snipers in schools and mosques, and trigger-pullers blending in with civilians on Gaza’s streets." "Its two top military commanders, Yahya Sinwar and Mohammed Deif, are believed to have surrounded themselves with hostages deep in the elaborate tunnel network constructed over the years since Israelis withdrew from Gaza." "But Israel is changing the way it fights. The first phase was an air campaign targeting buildings in which – and under which – Hamas had command-and-control centers and armories." "In the second phase, Israeli infantry engaged in grueling urban combat. Phase III is to be lower intensity with fewer boots on the ground. Elite units will conduct special operations. More tunnels will be destroyed. Attempts to rescue hostages will continue." "The goal remains unchanged: to cripple Hamas’ military and governing capabilities."

The difficult truth is that on October 7, the State of Israel failed to uphold the sacred vow of Never Again. The security and military leadership failed. The political and governmental leadership failed. The intellectual and policy leadership failed. In some ways, we as a society failed. We turned legitimate debates into demonization. Security was sacrificed for political posturing. We now have to rebuild. New leadership in the security, military, political and policy realms. New paradigms and strategies. A renewed commitment to unity, mutual responsibility and solving disputes through respectful dialogue, despite continued strong disagreements on key issues. It may take 5 years. 10 years. Maybe more. But it is a critical, sacred mission, in order to ensure for our children that truly, Never Again.

A new read helping to resource thinking over trending political circumstances in the USA and what outcomes it has to the whole debate over the idealism-realism nexus in Civil-Military Relations, in light of the contradicting evolving nature of liberal democracy and resurgence of military coups in Africa and rising insurgencies.

As some may have noticed, there has been an uptick in my posting frequency on LinkedIn with relation to Military History and Strategy. For those who don’t know, last year I enrolled at Royal Military College of Canada/Collège militaire royal du Canada and will be transitioning from the Military Police to a new occupation as an Infantry Officer. My program is heavily focused on military history, defence policy, and military strategy. Very quickly, it has left me with a lot of thoughts, opinions, and stories that I enjoy sharing. I have started a Substack, as well some social media pages called Campaigns, Conquests, & Conflicts where I will post articles, stories, etc. similar to those I’ve already been posting. Some will be based on assignments I’ve had to complete, and others will be based on personal interests. My goal is to have somewhere I can put down my thoughts and engage in healthy conversations with others on military history, strategy, and defence policy. My Substack can be found below, and thanks to anybody who reads! #MilitaryHistory #WarStudies #BattleAnalysis #MilitaryStrategy #DefensePolicy #HistoricalWarfare #StrategicStudies #WarTactics #MilitaryLeadership #NationalSecurity #HistoricalBattles #MilitaryInsights #DefenseStrategy #Geopolitics #MilitaryAnalysis #WarAndPeace #SecurityStudies #MilitaryResearch #DefenseHistory #MilitaryPolicy

"To the second risk—that of domestic unrest creating political instability—Putin and his coterie of supporters continue to use old Russian methods to offset this problem. Arrests, assassinations, disappearances and suppression are the primary methods employed against this challenge and to deter domestic opposition to his policies vis-à-vis Ukraine.” Great assessment from LTC Amos Fox. Joseph Torigian’s book, "Prestige, Manipulation, and Coercion," offers one of the best contemporary discussions of the power struggle within autocratic states and systems. Putin’s staying power does not directly depend on popular support; rather, prestige - his interpersonal power within the selectorate; coercion - his control of the state's levers of power (e.g., state security and police forces); and manipulation - his ability to control the selectorate to the degree that viable alternatives are suppressed.

A great reflection and assessment on the second year anniversary of the Russo-Ukrainian war. What have we learned? The ultimate question, but the equally valid question is what do we need to do to integrate these insights and learnings in the military?

Historical Experiences and Collective Memory Societal values are often rooted in a nation's historical experiences, which shape collective memory and identity. These historical narratives influence how a society perceives threats and opportunities, guiding its strategic choices. For instance, a country with a history of colonialism may prioritize sovereignty and self-determination in its foreign policy, while a nation that has experienced significant military conflict may develop a strategic culture that emphasizes military preparedness and deterrence.
