At the core of what we do, we seek to understand first the situation then use the learnings to provide meaningful impact.
Last month, our colleague Eric Otieno embarked on a site visit with Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL) to Kisumu, Kenya, where we are planning to LEDify 100 secondary boarding schools. While we expected to see dark classrooms, we were confronted with unexpected insights that are difficult to understand from afar. For example: - Most schools currently use fluorescent lights and pay high energy bills, and in general, there is a lack of awareness on energy efficient lighting. - Many schools are overpopulated, to the extent that in the evenings, some students study outdoors close to classroom windows as their light source. - We often saw broken lights and lights that have been removed from their fixtures or parts removed from bulbs by students. - In girls’ dormitories, lights are often kept on throughout the night, to create a sense of security. These are cool white lights that can disrupt sleeping patterns. These are some of the valuable insights that will inform our project design as we move forward. We’ll need to consider what types of lighting are relevant to people’s real needs, where to install them, how to prevent vandalism, and most importantly – how to raise awareness and engage better with students and teachers. We are always curious to learn about your experience or suggestions here! Are you willing to have your perspective shifted? Coming from southern African Zimbabwe, and landing in first-world Europe, it was definitely bound to happen for me. Four months at MIJKSENAAR added a new lens to the way I look at places: a helpful way to learn the current place I am in (Amsterdam), a new way to see the place I am from (Harare), and a design tool I will take with me into urban projects. It was a privilege to learn from the designers at this company, and a privilege to end my time there with a lively lunchtime presentation. I shared findings from my research project: How people find their way in Harare. It was a bringing together of my two ‘worlds’, through language and a lens they are familiar with: wayfinding, but with findings refreshingly southern African: informal and community-driven solutions. What lessons could Harare hold for European wayfinding designers? I'll be sharing more from this project over the coming weeks: How People find their way in Harare, relying on learned experience and social networks, where the formal systems are lacking. Last week marked the kickoff for this collaborative project led by Living Future Europe, in partnership with Espaço Municipal, Renovação Urbana e Gestão de Património, E.E.M. and the Municipality of Maia, situated in the Metropolitan Area of Porto, Portugal 🇵🇹 In partnership with local stakeholders, Sobrotherhood seeks to activate self-sustaining socio-economic ecosystems at the district level, leveraging marginalized perspectives, biophilic design principles, and the NEB guiding framework. Our vision is to transform neglected public spaces surrounding social housing structures into dynamic hubs for social engagement and economic empowerment. The project anticipates generating positive socio-environmental and economic impacts, fostering better connections with nature, enhancing intergenerational communication, building resilience, and empowering marginalized perspectives. Sobrotherhood aims to set a new precedent for sustainable urban revitalization. While the rest of the world revitalizes their historic town centres by pedestrianizing streets, building safe bicycle parking spaces, incentivising shared mobility schemes and keeping traffic OUT, Stellenbosch is stuck in a 60s mentality (not a good look...) where business-as-usual solutions will continue to lead to business-as-usual conditions. More than 85% of car trips in Stellenbosch are less than 5km. With a generally flat topography, there is no excuse. Please sign the petition to stop the proposed parking garage in the middle of Stellenbosch, so that officials and politicians can start engaging with international best practice and what future generations are pleading for. 🌆 Excited to share my not recent ( 😅 ) experience participating in the "Cities for All: Enabling sustainable and inclusive urban planning" discussion hosted by UNITAR CIFAL Jeju. 🌍 As an urban planning and engineering student, it was an enlightening journey delving into the diverse perspectives and projects aimed at fostering sustainable and inclusive urban environments worldwide. Throughout the program, I had the privilege to engage with governmental, business, and NPO representatives, witnessing their innovative approaches to urban planning. It was inspiring to see initiatives that prioritize the needs of all individuals, regardless of background, religion, culture, or community. However, the discussions also shed light on the challenges we face in achieving truly inclusive cities. One pressing issue we explored was the dilemma surrounding the treatment of marginalized groups, such as homeless individuals, in urban spaces. It's disheartening to witness how certain populations are marginalized and excluded from public spaces under the guise of urban beautification and "IDEAL city image". One key takeaway was the importance of addressing conflicts of interest in the planning and implementation processes. I believe it's crucial for urban planners to navigate these complexities to ensure that the voices of all stakeholders are heard and respected in ALL stages of urban planning. When some groups are brought for discussion only at a certain process makes it almost impossible for them to fully represent themselves and their communities! Moving forward, I'm committed to advocating for urban development that prioritizes equity, accessibility, and community engagement. Together, we can work towards creating cities that truly belong to everyone. 🏙️ My sincere gratitude to the team of UNITAR CIFAL for such an engaging workshop. As #LondonClimateActionWeek kicks off, it's crucial to reflect on the vital role urban planning plays in crafting cities that meet diverse needs, especially those of children. As UNICEF-IRC (2004) eloquently put it, "Children are individual people - they have equal status to adults as members of the human race - they are not possessions of parents, products of the State, not people-in-the-making." During my undergraduate, I worked on a project that underscored the significance of incorporating children's perspectives in urban planning.
