Some of the best advice that helped me grow, get promoted, or find new opportunities have been from individuals at more advanced stages of life compared to me (or with a different life story or culture compared to mine). Over the years I've had opportunities to forge respectful and generationally diverse friendships with all types of people. My perspective on life and personal approaches to learning plus work are enriched and expanded as a result. I am who I am, with the skills I possess, thanks in part to all the good people who believed in and supported me. For that, I'm forever grateful. Since I was very young I recognised others as unique individuals with their own experiences that we can't discern from appearance alone, because that's pretty much a fact and we're all a bit different aren't we? (At least most of the books with chapter analysis work taught me this—thank you literature teachers!). But if everyone can give advice, how do we know what works? What helped me was learning someone's background or life and work perspective. Doing this gives me context that helps me decide whether advice on approaches or plans may or may not work for me. And for advice that might not currently apply... unless it's utterly out of left field and bizarre, I shelve it. Who knows? It could help one day in the future for a different scenario more similar to the lived experience of the person who shared it. So, I really appreciate the article by Harvard Business Review and hope more people come to appreciate those in different age and life stages in professional settings. We all want to do our best at work and life, and if we're not there it means there's still more to learn and adapt to. #generationaldiversity

Generational Diversity Another great post shared below by HBR, as generational diversity is something we are aware of here at Avantor and more specifically within our Avantor Services (former MESM) In-House Engineering (IHE) business function. From our apprenticeship engineers to trainee engineers from trainees to more senior time served engineering specialists - we have inter generational friendships forming off the back of our day-to-day taking place from within our IHE business function, this in turn extends out to our wider business. That’s also down to the fact we are also committed to sharing our engineering knowlege and product expertise in order to add value, to benefit & support other business activities (along the way), to suport our valued customers & to also importantly to “help set science in motion to create a better world”.

Diversity in organizations has statistically been proven to have a number of benefits to organizations; from higher productivity (30+%) to better outputs. Managers have a unique role in the part they play to model this every day. The suggestions in this arricle could be used to honor and encourage all types of diversity.
