In the grand entry of this Pacific Heights Francophile estate, we replaced the oak parquet floor with diamond-patterned stone and wood inlaid paving. Skurman Architects juxtaposed its geometry with the curvilinear staircase, which embraces a Ruth Asawa sculpture. Suzanne Tucker of Tucker & Marks deftly mixed a rare antique Scottish twelve-sided table with Han dynasty urns and vessels #vanacker #skurmanarchitects #tuckerandmarks #pacificheights 📸: Roger Davies Link below to view the full project on our website! https://lnkd.in/gSQi5Fvt

🗿🌑 Guardians of the Gables: The Gargoyles of Gothic Architecture As October casts its mystical shadows, let's turn our gaze to one of Gothic architecture’s most iconic features—gargoyles. Originating in the 12th century, these stone sentinels are crafted with meticulous detail by master masons, serving dual purposes: as water spouts protecting the masonry from erosion and as symbolic guardians designed to ward off evil. The legend tells us that gargoyles, with their grotesque forms, were believed to scare away malevolent spirits, thus safeguarding the buildings they adorned. At RVM Construction, we celebrate the fusion of functionality and artistry that gargoyles represent, reminding us that true craftsmanship stands at the intersection of practicality and imagination. Our projects embrace this philosophy, ensuring that every structure is not only built to last but also to inspire. 📞 (740) 681-1294 #Gargoyles #GothicArchitecture #MasonryArt #RVMConstruction #StructuralArt

See details for the whole story abt this Gargoyle series
John Taylor Arms produced a total of fourteen etchings for a series he titled the "Gargoyle Series." They were done between 1920 and 1947. The Annex Galleries acquired a complete set of this series from the estate of a client. Our efforts to sell the complete series proved fruitless so we began offering them individually. We have put together this flip-book for those who are interested in seeing the full series. The images still available for purchase will link to the item on our website where more information can be found: https://lnkd.in/dN3Qmrxs J. T. Arms was fascinated by what he termed the Gothic Spirit in early Gothic architecture. One of his focuses was on the elaborate waterspouts on the cathedrals, carved in the shapes of "gargoyles". In 1920 he began a series of 14 prints featuring various gargoyles of the French cathedrals. It is reported that he would climb out to the facade to a building in order to get what he felt was the best angle for an etching. Gargoyles, decorative water spouts employed to drain water from rooftops, were designed in the forms of fanciful animals or figures and projected out from the walls of the cathedral. John Taylor Arms was also a trained architect who felt very deeply that man's greatest achievements in architecture are evidenced in the cathedrals and churches from the Gothic era.

UNESCO Heritage: The Pont du Gard. - Built: 40-60 AD by the Romans as part of an aqueduct system to transport water to Nîmes. The aqueduct's gentle slope of just 0.04% ensured efficient water flow. - Materials: The bridge was built using dry masonry (without mortar), meaning the stones were cut and placed so precisely that they fit tightly without the need for binding material. - Height: 48.8 meters (160 feet), making it the tallest Roman aqueduct bridge still in existence. - Length: The total length of the Pont du Gard is 275 meters (902 feet) with three tiers of arches. - Design: The arched structure provides strength and stability, distributing weight evenly. #PontduGard #RomanEngineering #UNESCO #Heritage #AncientArchitecture #Aqueduct #HistoricalLandmark #ArchitecturalMarvel #FrenchHistory #StructuralEngineering
