As we witness the agricultural protests sweeping across Europe, it's time to ask: What about the shipbuilding sector? For years, this highly specialized sector, with its skilled workforce and significant multiplier effect, has been decimated by unfair competition from Asian shipyards. As an example: In Europe, it costs €1,000 to certify and ensure a component "works". In Asia, the same certification costs just €100, without any guarantee of functionality. What can we do to get the European Commission's attention? It seems that only drastic measures will prompt them to act. The future of European shipbuilding hangs in the balance. It's time for the European Commission to take decisive action to protect this vital sector before it's too late. #SaveShipbuilding #EuropeanIndustry #FairCompetition https://lnkd.in/dyqvtEAV

Did you know that China, Korea and Japan are the world’s largest ship building countries? (China and Japan are also 1 & 2 on the Olympic Medal Count! 😲 🥇) However, shipbuilding yards in both Asia and Korea are having issues currently keeping up with the slew of new builds on the order book, both for different reasons. Asia is experiencing production bottlenecks with issues identified as labour, engines, steel processing, and coating capacity all putting a strain already stretched production timelines. South Korea’s top three shipbuilders are also facing the possibility of a massive series of strikes this month. Unionised workers at HD Hyundai, Hanwha Ocean, and Samsung Heavy Industries—three of the world's largest shipbuilders—have all voted to strike due to the failure of top management at these yards to reach an agreement on pay packages. The timing and duration of the strikes are expected to be announced next week. Take a look at this time lapse of a Maersk Triple E series container ship being built (I find it somewhat soothing). These ships are often built in multiples and can take a year to complete. https://lnkd.in/gZRky49v

How do New Zealand decisions effect also Estonian suppliers network! It was a sad news that KiwiRail project in Korea has been cancelled by the New Zealand government. But how does this have a effect to the other side of the world in Estonia? It does effect as we have been part of suppling engineering, high quality interior finishing materials and furniture to Ropax vessels built in Korea in cooperation with our local long time partner SEJIN Technical Industries Superviser. KiwiRail was supposed to be our next big project together in Korea. This is a great example how global shipbuilding market is, one decision made on the other side of the world can easily effect suppliers globally. We are not complaining we just close the loose ends and packing up this project now, but it reminds us in how big global business we are involved and how things can change quickly nowadays. But there will be more good new coming form Korea for sure and EMI continues to grow in this region. https://lnkd.in/ddETW-7S

The key factors for shipboard safety is open communication between the crew. Mike Morales, president of the MOL Magsaysay Maritime Academy, maintained that seafarers, regardless of rank, should be able to speak when something goes or is about to go wrong with shipboard operations. It was revealed, however, that the Filipinos' slant toward conformity, reticence, and the traditional respect and submission to elders and those in higher positions weigh in the communication dynamics onboard ships. This is bolstered by the fact that major maritime schools in the country implement a quasi-military education that trains cadets to submit to authority with blind obedience. In this regard, various industry leaders comment on whether the country's regimental form of maritime education needs tweaking for some of its premier maritime institutions. (Link below on the views and opinions of our maritime friends: a veteran seafarer and retired manning president, a maritime trainer, a maritime school instructor, and a maritime chaplain) https://lnkd.in/d_YUkZX2

Union calls choice of shipbuilder a £42 million scandal Plans to build the Isles of Scilly's two new ferries in Asia have been described as "an absolute scandal". The Isles of Scilly Steamship Group (ISSG) awarded the £42m contract to PIRIOU, a French shipbuilder, which said it would build the ferries in Vietnam. The workers' trade union, GMB Union, said that shipbuilders in the UK have been "hugely let down" by the ISSG's decision. A GMB national officer, said: "It’s an absolute scandal – instead of building these ferries at a proud UK shipyard, in the heart of a community that needs the work, they're being built on the other side of the world. “Shipbuilders of the South West have been hugely let down by the government and the Isles of Scilly Steamship Group." The ISSG said the main reasons for not awarding the ferries contract to UK Shipbuilders Harland & Wolff were "lack of recent experience in building technical vessels, inability to offer a refund guarantee and a much higher overall cost." "We also had to consider Harland and Wolff’s financial stability," a spokesperson said. "The audit opinion in Harland & Wolff’s most recently published full year accounts was that ‘a material uncertainty exists that may cast significant doubt on the group’s ability to continue as a going concern.’ "From this perspective, choosing Appledore was far too much of a risk." https://lnkd.in/ewb8gsuP National Shipbuilding Office #smes #ISeaSMEs #shipbuilding #maritimeconnection

This was an incredibly fascinating and important discussion on navigating the seas amidst the presence of 21st century piracy. Freedom on the seas is something we regular people are so privileged not to think much about. Yet, we are all affected by its challenges whether we realize it or not. With a balance of calculated diplomacy and a firm military presence, the USA and Norway are among the key players at the frontlines of this under-the-radar global challenge.
