📰Read about the Vancouver Island Economic Alliance Summit in the news: "Complexity of Vancouver Island’s housing crisis highlighted at economic summit" Tyler Hay of the Nanaimo News Bulletin attended the VIEA 'State of the Island' Economic Summit and reported on the "The Housing Equation: The blunt truth about what caused the housing crisis and how we can find our way forward" session where experts delved into the complexities fueling Vancouver Island's housing crisis. Key takeaways: 🏠Housing Shortages: Federal cuts to subsidized housing in the '80s and '90s have left us playing catch-up, with housing supply unable to meet demand. 🏠Approval Challenges: Despite efforts to streamline housing approvals, municipal policies and local opposition make getting projects off the ground challenging. With decisions often held up at the municipal level, experts suggest more regional or provincial control may help accelerate development. 🏠Cost Barriers for Essential Workers: Affordable housing remains out of reach even for professions like firefighters and nurses, essential to vibrant communities. 🏠Labour Shortage and Cost of Materials: The high cost of living on the Island deters skilled trades, limiting housing construction. The session highlighted that, while there are no quick fixes, proactive policy changes and a collaborative approach are essential to making Vancouver Island more livable for everyone. Brilliant analysis here from Ran Boydell . We need the UK government to intervene much more strongly in our housing crisis and re-develop our housing model away from profiteering and landbanking and back towards non- profit housing provision as a public service and human right. In short we need a national government funded housing programme supporting industry and local communities. I hope Labour will provide that leadership after our elections in UK. Nothing less will do now. #housingcrisis #housingsystem #policyreform

This has a very interesting article on housing in Australia (thanks for sharing Matt Devine ) that also has relevance to the UK market. Link in comments. My thoughts in addition to this piece in addition to the need for more public housing identified as to how we need to promote more competition and use the planning system to meet housing need. This is a huge crisis that needs new interventions from governments. - The model in NSW also used to work well where by Landcom (state owned) would bring new release areas including house and land packages as well as just one to market alongside the private sector. This was commonplace in the region I grew up in. This is worth exploring in a UK context to promote more competition for the private onwnership sector. https://lnkd.in/ee7h5Hzn - some planning policies in NSW like SEPP 5 https://lnkd.in/eDS5dumd facilitated more aged housing in peri-urban settings but required housing to be lived in through use of covenants requiring only over 55 years residents/owners. Could these type of planning policies ensure housing that is reserved for aged people, first time buyers & key workers in key locations both in Australian and UK planning systems ? - do we need to follow Singapore that has c.80% public housing, with measures that limit prices and have housing treated as as a societal need / basic infrastructure ? https://lnkd.in/eB66UkdJ Thoughts from my network most welcome !

Old news but certainly worth the post given the number of stakeholders the National Association of REALTORS® has in Europe. It's encouraging to see European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen's commitment to addressing Europe's housing challenges. The initiative focuses on enhancing access to quality homes amidst rising living costs and a need for affordable housing across the continent. The targeted investments in sustainable housing solutions, support for vulnerable groups, and collaboration among governments, the private sector, and civil society are set to drive impactful change in European housing. #NARGlobal #Housing #Sustainability #EuropeanCommission #UrsulaVonDerLeyen #SocialImpact #Europe
