2023 Financial Sector Stability Assessment for the Netherlands is published today with the 2024 Article IV Consultation Staff Report. The Financial Sector Assessment Program (FSAP) focused on three cross-cutting themes—housing, non-banks, and climate risks—while carrying out a comprehensive review of financial sector oversight. Over the last year, I have had the pleasure of working with IMF collogues and the authorities, on climate physical risks associated with floods and climate transition risks from an uncertain policy path to bring down nitrogen depositions. https://lnkd.in/ePR3tzty

It generates billions of dollars in economic activity annually, supporting thousands of jobs directly and indirectly. The port facilitates the movement of goods, including automobiles, machinery, agricultural products, and raw materials, contributing to local, regional, and national economies. #TradeGateway: As one of the leading ports on the East Coast of the United States, Port Baltimore serves as a crucial gateway for international trade. A great video from the World Economic Forum on the global impact of the tragic accident which closed the port of Baltimore. I recently wrote an article on transportation security focused on cargo as well if you want to deep dive a bit more into this critical component of our global economy. Take care of yourself, and if you can, someone else. https://lnkd.in/gHctj85u #transportation #security #cargo #shipping #supplychain

#economics #politics Former Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives Newt Gingrich writes about the Francis Scott Key bridge collapse when a Singapore Maersk cargo shipping vessel crashed into the bridge on X (https://lnkd.in/ekbWk2u7): “Why would President Biden promise to pay to rebuild the Baltimore bridge when the insurance companies are responsible? Why add a billion dollars to US debt when the big insurance companies exist for precisely this purpose? Is there no idea too dumb for the Biden team to embrace?” Insurance companies are clearly the first backstop I had not thought of when I wrote about it a few days ago in a LinkedIn post https://lnkd.in/eg8aytcT. In response to Gingrich, however, it depends on how the insurance on the bridge was taken out. Is the cargo ship crashing into the Key bridge an Act of God or an accident covered by the policy or is the accident too expensive for the insurance company exempt in fine print, making Warren Buffet’s reinsurers like Swiss Re worried about America’s aging infrastructure? Moreover, why is Maersk not bearing the liability for negligence? As ChatGPT-based applications wildly proliferate around the world with bubble-level investment guided by no safety and security standards for AI, US critical infrastructure including power plants and the grid, not only aging bridges, is subject to heightened risk. How is the critical infrastructure insured? Is it insured at all? This could be a perfect storm for the U.S. economy.
