A recent study reveals that the underwater kelp forests along the Pacific Coast, initially believed to have evolved over the past 14 million years, actually flourished more than 32 million years ago off the Northwest Coast. This finding challenges previous assumptions, indicating that the kelp ecosystems predate the emergence of modern marine mammals, sea urchins, birds, and bivalves that currently inhabit these forests. 🕰️It’s HELCOM Through History time!🕰️ The first coastal and marine Baltic Sea Protected Areas (BSPAs, currently HELCOM Marine Protected Areas, or MPAs) were established in 1994, following the adoption of the 1992 Helsinki Convention. The Helsinki Convention requires Contracting Parties to take all appropriate measures to conserve natural habitats and biological diversity in the Baltic Sea. Criteria for HELCOM MPAs include designation based on factors such as being important feeding areas for species, hosting ecologically significant habitats and supporting keystone species. 🐟 #HELCOMThroughHistory
