For my fellows in AA, this message is for you. Across the recovery sphere, members are being ostracized for seeking alternative therapies to address "outside issues"—issues and therapies on which we are supposed to have no opinion. Members are being punished and expelled from their recovery groups and fellowships due to ignorance, judgment, and misinformation, in direct violation of our Traditions. As a result, they find themselves as isolated and alone as when they first walked into the rooms. Can you imagine the devastation of that?? WE MUST DO BETTER! In memory of Mark, I want to remind us all of some quotes from the long form of Tradition One: "Our common welfare should come first; personal recovery depends upon AA unity." 🎆 UNITY - "Our lives, the lives of all to come, depend squarely upon it." 🎇 "No AA can compel another to do anything; nobody can be punished or expelled." 🎆 "His life actually depends upon obedience to spiritual principles." (Mark was doing just that.) Not only does AA literature emphasize that we must stay together or we will surely die, but Johann Hari, the author of 'Chasing the Scream', also said, "The opposite of addiction is not recovery; the opposite of addiction is connection." Hari's work underscores the importance of addressing the root causes of addiction, such as social isolation and lack of meaningful relationships, as crucial for effective recovery. If this is true, why are we sending people away? If this is true, why are we sending people away?

Mark Guckel, RCPF died by suicide on May 25th this year. He was an incredibly passionate, intelligent, and open minded person. Mark asked me to share his final thoughts, and I’d like to honor his memory by doing so. Mark suffered in silence with a variety of symptoms that were trauma based. He was a person who was able to make progress in his recovery through the use of psychedelic medicine. Because of this there were times Mark did not feel welcomed within the recovery community. We must do better to welcome all different pathways within the recovery community. Your joy and presence will be missed Mark. I still had so much more to learn from you.

Mark reached out to me two years ago. I was unable to assist him other than to offer to help him find a therapist in his area and to continue to reach out for help from diverse resources. He declined offers for help at times. He also attended Psychedelics In Recovery meetings 2-3 times, but did not continue to attend and connect with like-minded/open-minded others. This is not about inclusivity in recovery meetings or the recovery community. This is about someone who had severe mental health challenges related to trauma, grief, bereavement, and major depression. Yes, people in AA can be judgmental and rigid about use of psychedelics as part of a recovery process but AA isn’t to blame for someone’s death.

When an organization becomes this dogmatic and ostracizes its members it acts more like a cult. Even Bill W. experimented with LSD and researched and traveled the world to see what therapies could help with addiction. PAT has a place in recovery and AA must evolve to accept it whether it is cannabis for sleep/pain or Psilocybin for PTSD. AA is fine with allowing SSRIs and Neuroleptics which are very questionable pharmaceuticals, so, hypocrisy and ignorance still abound.

I'm seeing many selfish and self centered responses. If, whatever group your involved with, does not approve of your "outside issues" move on. Perhaps the talk of getting high and dropping acid makes other sober people uncomfortable. If it's an outside issue, leave it outside

Mark Guckel, RCPF , maybe there’s a world beyond this one where you can hear or feel this but you are a beautiful soul. You inspired me on days when I felt doubt and you made an impact on me with your courage. We were just passers by on this platform, engaging with each other’s messages but it felt like a friend in the dark. May you be held in love and take the refuge you so desperately needed in the arms of a loving universe. Rest in great natural peace. From my heart, Emily

I am so sorry to hear about Mark. Suicide is a profound tragedy. He and I had a nice phone conversation back in March after he reached out to me. He sounded optimistic and upbeat when we spoke but it is often true that sometimes those suffering internally don't share the extent of their distress. As far as being supported by psychedelic friendly AA members, I know that there were quite a few of us in his corner to provide that. I wish he would have availed of us more frequently. In any case, may Mark find rest and peace.

Unfortunately, having spent 10 years in 12 step recovery, my experience was that 12 step programs biggest "flaw" was personalities.. as the traditions say.. Principles before personalities.. not always easy to remember.

Mark committed suicide because he gained relief from trauma through psychedelics and fellow recovery members vilified him for dong so? Can you name the groups and individuals that did that? You believe this is a widespread phonemenon — would you say it dominates the recovery movement?

Omg...this is so sad. Although we never met, or spoke...i often engaged with Mark's posts and supported his messages of love and healing and connection to the animal kingdom. Blessings to this sweet soul. 🙏

This is heartbreaking. I have missed engaging with Mark on this site. Truly loved all of our conversations. Love exuded from him in this world and will continue to do so. Prayers for him and his loved ones. Such a shame to lose another human being to suicide, especially when he was trying so hard to get help. ❤️🙏

This is so heartbreaking and crushing. I learned so much from Mark just through his posts here and I know he had a lifetime of lessons for us all still. Gosh this is so hard to hear. I’m so very sorry for his friends and loved ones.
