Not making enough money selling beauty products? It's time to reevaluate your cost of goods sold (COGS). You should understand and monitor your COGS religiously to succeed! That's knowing all expenses associated with producing and delivering products to your customers: ✅ Raw materials,  ✅ Packaging,  ✅ Labor,  and other costs directly tied to production over a given period. You can stay on top of your numbers when you: → Negotiate with suppliers: make it a point to build rapport and feel free to negotiate prices or ask for bulk discounts. → Optimize your product formulation: you may cut costs by simplifying your formula and sourcing cheaper alternative raw materials. → Improve production efficiency: make it a priority to automate mundane tasks to eliminate errors and speed up production. → Reduce packaging costs: explore the options of more cost-effective or even sustainable packaging. → Outsource non-core activities: you are not a jack-of-all-trades. Focus on your core activities and outsource the rest. → Regularly review your pricing strategy: always ensure your pricing model covers all production costs while remaining competitive. Do you own your formula? (Many known brands don’t!) It may be surprising but it’s the reality! But, why “make a fuss” about it? Because: 1. Without ownership, you’re dependent on third-party manufacturers. 2. It limits your ability to innovate or tweak your product to meet customer needs. 3. When you don't own the formula, your products may suffer quality inconsistencies. 4. If you don’t own your formula, it might be shared with other brands. 5. Relying on third-party formulas can lead to higher production costs, which often get passed down to the consumer. 6. If your supplier decides to discontinue a formula, your brand could be left scrambling for alternatives. Not owning your formula is risky - you are always on the fence! Your company’s lifeline is in someone else’s control!
