Last night here in Barcelona, on the countdown to ISE, a dinner for Owen Ellis of the AV User Group celebrated his forty years in the AV industry. Some days you remember why you love what you do. Owen started out at Metrovideo, back in the days even before video projection. In those days we made extraordinary multi-projector presentations using Kodak Carousel (Ektagraphic in the US) slide projectors, Wess slide mounts, Navitar lenses, AVL controllers and Revox 4 track reel to reel tape decks. The art and quality of those 35mm shows reached genuine peaks of quality that the digital world took a long time to equal. But I digress! Like many of us, Owen worked his way up, learning at every step, ending up heading Morgan Stanley’s global AV estate. But he crash-tested the proposition of ‘if you want to get something done, ask a busy person’ as he also managed a leadership role in the AV User Group. Owen’s passion for the AV industry was evident in many ways. His support for my and AVIXA’s work in creating and using AV standards meant a lot to me, both personally and professionally. I think of him and Bob Simpson in the same breath as two of the two most significant people in the industry by their generosity of spirit in their encouragement and fostering of others. The AV User Group (AVUG) went from strength to strength, to the point where Owen took it on as a full time role. And he and Andrea Jupp have further developed its global footprint. I’m proud to be a friend and associate of AVUG, who have kindly hosted various standards-related presentations and discussions from me over the years. And since I separated my consulting into a separate practice, Owen’s AV Consultancy Group has also played an important part of my professional life too. For those few end users that don’t know about the AVUG and its various global chapters, ISE is a great time to investigate it. In carefully managed events all over the world, AV and technology managers representing combined estates of many thousands of rooms and venues meet to discuss issues, problems and solutions informally and in facilitated discussions. Carefully selected manufacturers sponsor the main events and give presentations giving the inside track on roadmaps and technology developments. (They get heckled if they overcook the sales pitch!) At the end of the day, there’s a drinks and informal gathering where the day's events get discussed, latest gossip does the rounds - and sponsors get the chance to talk with the most significant buyers there are in the AV industry. So last night, surrounded by various friends and colleagues from industry, universities, museums and government departments, we had the chance to raise a glass to Owen, whose generosity and friendship I value so much. Wow - Infocomm 2024 was fantastic. It was exactly what I had hoped. A bunch of new, exciting products. These are my opinions only and don't represent any association to others. I was so happy to see working IPMX products from PlexusAV. Also, a great joy to learn AMX is using Dante AV-A or Dante AV-H. Knowing AV manufacturers are starting to jump into the realm of standards-based and interoperable AV over IP solutions is encouraging for the state of our industry. I also really appreciated the demo by DVIGear in the SDVOE booth as they are taking the standards and building out new features that are on the very edge of new technology. But there are still AVoIP shortcomings. For me the main drawback is that after almost 15 years of AV over IP (I know I looked at the SVSI booth almost 15 years ago), we have multiple competing standards that each offer something unique. There is SDVOE (SDVoE Alliance), SMTPE ST 2110, IPMX (AIMS Alliance for IP Media Solutions), 3 Flavors of Dante AV (Audinate), NDI (NDI), and so many other "standards" available for AV over IP. AV professionals can look over feature sets and find a great solution for any specific application but selecting one of these standards is a much more difficult decision. Should AV professionals suggest one of these more "open" standards? Will one of these standards win (think BluRay vs. HD DVD)? Which is right for any given customer?
