Learning from the Young: An Inspiring Encounter with Manan Today, I had an inspiring encounter with a remarkable young man named Manan from Davanagere, Karnataka. Manan, whose name means “contemplate,” truly made me reflect on the hidden potential within every young soul. 🌟 During a Guru Purnima function, where many college students came, enjoyed their breakfast, and left, there was one student who remained long after the event had ended. I was curious to see a student still standing at the food counter, serving payasam (a sweet dish). 🍲 This young man, Manan, a final-year space engineering student with a CGPA of over 9.5, silently and diligently served food for over an hour. When I asked him why he was serving food when there were workers assigned for the job, his answer left me in awe. Manan noticed a few children and mothers struggling to manage the stacked plates and decided to help. He felt it was better to distribute the plates to everyone rather than assist just one person. Once that task was done, he noticed no one was serving sweets and voluntarily took up the role. 🍽️ When I inquired about his motivation, Manan simply smiled and said, “Sir, I am a Jain. From my childhood, I have done Seva (service). My parents also served others, so it felt natural to step in and help.” His words and actions were a testament to the values instilled in him from a young age. 🙏 In addition to his selfless service, Manan is an accomplished writer, having written articles for various print magazines and newspapers. He has even published two books and received recognition from Karnataka Sahitya Parishat. 📚✍️ This encounter made me realize the importance of nurturing such values in our children. Let’s take a page from Manan’s book and strive to serve and support one another. Yesterday I had the pleasure of leading a session at St. Teresa's College, Ernakulam, titled " The Hustle & Heart: Making the Leap in Early Career." In this session, I shared my experiences of starting my professional journey early and the key lessons I've learned along the way. Do you know ? Srikanth Bolla was born blind in 1992 in Andhra Pradesh, India. Despite his disability, he was determined to receive an education. However, he faced numerous challenges due to societal prejudices and limited resources for the visually impaired. Many schools refused to admit him, but his parents fought for his right to education. ✔ Bolla's persistence paid off when he gained admission to MIT, Manipal, where he pursued a degree in business management. After facing rejection from several companies during campus placements due to his disability, he decided to take matters into his own hands. 💡 In 2012, at the age of 19, Bolla founded Bollant Industries with the goal of providing sustainable employment opportunities for people with disabilities. He started with a small team and focused on producing eco-friendly disposable products made from natural materials like leaves. 🌿 Despite facing skepticism and financial challenges, Bolla's determination and innovative approach helped Bollant Industries grow into a successful enterprise. Today, the company not only promotes environmental sustainability but also empowers individuals with disabilities by offering them meaningful employment. 👏 Bolla's life story is a testament to his resilience, courage, and entrepreneurial spirit. In Sanskrit, 'Vidyarthi' is eloquently crafted from 'Vidya' (learning) and 'Arthi' (seeker), encapsulating the essence of one who ardently pursues knowledge. This pursuit is not confined by age; a Vidyarthi could be a child, an adolescent, a youth, or an adult. What matters is the unwavering commitment to learning. Sanskrit Subhashitas beautifully extol the virtues of Vidya and the Vidyarthi, as exemplified in the profound verse: 'काकचेष्टा बकोध्यानं श्वाननिद्रा तथैव च। अल्पहारी गृहत्यागी विद्यार्थी पंचलक्षणम्॥' This imparts Five Characteristics of a Student Life: 1. **Kaak Cheshta (Crow's Endeavor):** The student, like a crow, tirelessly seeks knowledge wherever it may reside. 2. **Bako Dhyaanan (Heron's Concentration):** Similar to a heron focusing on catching fish, a student concentrates wholeheartedly on acquiring knowledge. 3. **Swan Nidra (Dog's Wakefulness):** Just as a dog wakes up alertly at the slightest sound, a student remains vigilant and avoids laziness. 4. **Alpahaaree (Moderation in Eating):** A student consumes in moderation, fostering a healthy digestive system and avoiding lethargy. 5. **Sadaachaaree (Righteous Conduct):** Upholding positive thoughts, showing respect to elders and teachers, and expressing love towards peers characterize the virtuous student.
