From ages 4 to 14, I was a competitive figure skater. And believe it or not, it helped inspire my career in fashion! Skating and fashion have always been intertwined; Vera Wang is probably the most famous example. Fortunately, I had two people a little bit closer to home to look up to- my coach Roger, and my mom. Roger had worked as a fashion designer in NYC prior to coaching a team of hyperactive pre-teen girls in our tiny town in Massachusetts. When he planned our skating routines, it wasn't just choreography; it was a full-on concept. 😉 He created all the designs for our costumes, every trim and sequin meticulously planned. He even went as far as to make fashion sketches of how our hair and makeup would look. Even on the days our team didn't win, we always looked like winners! For my solo competitions, my mom was the wardrobe department. Figure skating dresses are notoriously expensive, so she had a work-around: buy a plain dress, and bedazzle the hell out of it! I still remember each and every dress she spent time decorating- including this red number with a sparkly rick-rack heart. This was for my performance choreographed to Mandy Moore's cover of Stupid Cupid from the Princess Diaries soundtrack, obviously. Value isn't about the price; This wedding dress cost me £50. (yeah, you read that right) My snowboarding boots underneath the dress cost 4 x more. In my opinion, it was a dress that I was going to wear once and might get ruined that day. I wanted as much of the budget as possible to go on fun stuff like Champagne, venues, and photographers. The value in my mind when purchasing was the thought of seeing my husband's face as I rocked up to our ceremony in a dress with my snowboard. That was priceless. 👌 👰♀🏂 But the dress itself, not so much. I could (and did) achieve my goal with this £50 dress. This is what you have to remember when your low-paying clients start to complain about your pricing. They either do not value you (in which case, why are you working with them) or they can not see the value, in which case you have some work to do, my friend. Some of my clients have been able to charge 3 times more than those they were competing with because they were clearly able to demonstrate the value to the client. Chances are it's not your pricing at fault. Chances are it's how much your clients value your services. Because other brides are prepared to spend thousands on their dress. 💰💰💰 Find the clients who value you.
