🎉 I am thrilled to share that I’ve been appointed to the cultural council for North Attleboro, a local chapter of the Massachusetts Cultural Council! (I’m talking “raise your right hand”, three-year term, official). 🙋♀️ This is: -Voluntary -Unpaid -Going to consume a portion of my already busy schedule So why am I thrilled? Because I’m passionate about community engagement and when asked why I applied for the position, my simple answer was, “We could do better”. 💪 As a marketing professional, I’m naturally inclined to observe interactions and identify areas of opportunity. And it’s really hard to keep good ideas to myself. 😏 Having a mindset of “if it doesn’t exist, make it happen” has given me tremendous leadership and growth opportunities, from establishing professional networking groups to getting involved with charity organizations. Usually, I’m “making it happen” for the first time with little to no experience, but I am confident I can make a difference. And the organizations that bring me onboard agree. 🎨🤝 🔬 Culture works through the arts, humanities, and sciences to enrich communities, grow the economy, increase accessibility, and foster individual creativity. Our work involves raising awareness about social issues through powerful theatre performances and eye-opening visual arts exhibitions. We also conduct hands-on workshops focused on social justice and sustainability. But that's not all! We support important research to shape policy, mentor marginalized youth, and organize fundraising events to support their education. Our programs include scholarships and partnerships with NGOs and educational institutions. We also cherish and promote cultural heritage, run health camps, advocate for policy changes, and create platforms for youth leadership. By using various media channels, we spread our message far and wide and host conferences that bring people together for collaborative solutions. Our new logo is a symbol of our unwavering commitment to these causes and our mission to make a real difference in the world. In my first week as a volunteer at the Uzodhu Michael Foundation, I received positive feedback on my work. It has been an enlightening and energising experience, delving into research, offering well-informed suggestions, welcoming feedback, crafting presentations, and drafting proposals. As our founder wisely noted, 'Unuma, you may not believe that you are capable of tackling these new, bigger challenges, but what matters is that the people here believe in your potential.' I am grateful for this enriching experience! P.S. Who else finds every presentation to be a canvas for creativity? In recent years, we've seen a decline in volunteerism, and it's time we reflect on why this is happening. Many potential volunteers find it challenging to discover meaningful opportunities, and in our fast-paced world, time is a precious commodity. Additionally, stepping into a new environment alone can be daunting, and volunteer opportunities must be engaging and fulfilling. Many individuals may not be aware of the diverse range of volunteer opportunities available to them, and some may question the impact of their volunteer efforts, leading to a sense of disillusionment. Those who have previously volunteered may also experience burnout, leading to a reluctance to commit to new opportunities. To address these challenges, organizations and communities must collaborate in reimagining the volunteer experience. By fostering a culture of inclusivity and support and addressing barriers, we can reignite the spirit of volunteerism and create positive change together.
