CEOs face "compound volatility," a mix of short-term risks and long-term changes. I am pleased and honored to have completed the Risk Management for Corporate Leaders program at Harvard Business School. This rigorous program had: + 50 participants from around the world, the case discussion groups and numerous networking opportunities. + 16 case studies, with a total of more than 350 pages of information covering several topics such as the link between risk management and organizational culture, the control framework, project risk management, Cyber risks, political risks, strategic risks as well as Novel Risks, etc. + 5 "special guests": real "protagonists" of the case studies or Alumni who "brought them to life" and answered live questions from the participants. #business #riskmanagement #leaders #harvardbusinessschool #governance

Director, SANS Institute : Board Member, National Cybersecurity Alliance : Founder, Honeynet Project
People ask why the transition from the term "Security Awareness" to "Human Risk"? Perception. For better or worse, far too many CISO's and security professionals perceive Awareness as a compliance driven initiative (and they are often right). As so many of us know, in today's world our goal is so much more, we want to secure our workforce by changing peoples behavior and ultimately embed a strong security culture. Call our field whatever best works for you. My preference is "Human Risk" as that is ultimately the WHY of our role and what is most likely to engage and align with what CISO's and security teams care about. Business leaders are increasingly looking for a unified view of risk from their risk-related functions. That doesn't mean simplified or one-dimensional, but rather they want risk leaders to work together and do a better job of working beyond the boundaries of their own functions to help the company avoid silos. We asked CSOs to describe their most important relationships. MBA | Certified ScrumMaster® (CSM®) | CySA+ | Security+ | Governance Risk & Compliance | Security Awareness | Incident Response | Third Party Risk Management
Security awareness and human risk are interrelated concepts in cybersecurity. Security awareness involves educating individuals about cybersecurity threats and best practices to mitigate them, while human risk focuses on the vulnerability posed by human behavior within an organization. Security awareness programs aim to reduce human risk by educating employees and empowering them to make informed security decisions. Both approaches are complementary and require continuous improvement to effectively address evolving threats and behaviors in the cybersecurity landscape.

A great list but 3 and 4 below really struck me. They interest me from the delivery of an effective Internal Audit service. Do we have the right skills, can we attract the right skills, are we leading? I think Internal Audit should be in front of those we serve, adopting new technologies and demonstrating efficiency and value. If the CAE/HoIA is not securing a budget that includes investment in technology, and headroom for implementation therefore enabling a more effective service, are they too complacent? I think so. 😀 “3. Adoption of digital technologies may require new skills that are in short supply, requiring significant efforts to upskill and reskill existing employees. 4. The rapid speed of disruptive innovations enabled by new and emerging technologies or other market forces may outpace the organization's ability to compete without significant changes to the business model”. Leadership's perception of cybersecurity as a strategic investment doesn't always align with the views of IT and security teams. According to recent findings, while leaders express confidence in their security posture, 55% of IT and security professionals feel that their leaders lack a full understanding of vulnerability management. This disconnect can impact the credibility of the CISO and the perceived value of the security team. Moreover, there is often a misalignment in risk prioritization between organizational leaders and CISOs. Non-IT executive leaders tend to prioritize financial, legal, and reputational impacts more than IT and security professionals. Understanding these discrepancies is crucial for fostering effective communication and collaboration within organizations.
