Ely struggled to breathe as soon as she was born. At just six days old, she was admitted to the Alberta Children’s Hospital and diagnosed with basal meningeal encephalocele, an obstructive mass of tissue and fluid growing in her nasal cavity. Due to her size and fragile state, surgery would need to wait until Ely was bigger and stronger. However, she would need intervention to help her breathe — at 29 days old, she received a tracheostomy. While Ely’s parents were relieved their sweet baby’s condition had stabilized, they were also overwhelmed. A child with trach requires 24/7 care by someone equipped to handle the medical emergencies that may arise. They needed to learn basic day-to-day trach care – how it works, how to keep it clean and unobstructed, and what Ely’s breathing and function were like at baseline. They also needed to learn more stressful things, like changing her trach, how to suction fluids out and what to do if it becomes blocked or dislodged, leaving Ely without oxygen. The KidSIM Pediatric Simulation program at the Alberta Children’s Hospital was an invaluable resource for them. Funded with community support, KidSIM is a simulation program for medical experts, families, and schools to practice real-time, emergency scenarios on high-tech, life-like mannequins. Care providers can keep their skills as sharp as possible, and families like Ely's learn how to care for their child. Learn more about KidSIM and how it helped families last year in our 2023 Report to the Community. https://ow.ly/aQTM50QfIU3

🚨🦷 😰 Beware Parents! Teething Troubles Can Turn Treacherous! 🦷👶 Teething, a rite of passage for all infants and children, can be a distressing ordeal. As parents and caregivers, our instinct is to alleviate our child’s discomfort. However, the path to relief may be fraught with danger. Many are tempted to soothe their child’s gums with prescription or over-the-counter medicines containing benzocaine or lidocaine, or even homeopathic tablets. These may seem like viable solutions, but beware! The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has issued stern warnings about these products. They pose a serious risk to children, potentially leading to grave injuries, and in extreme cases, even death. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) advocates for safer alternatives to treat teething pain. Simple remedies such as rubbing your infant’s gums with a clean finger, or providing a firm rubber teething ring to chew on, can be effective. 👉📝👈 Remember, when it comes to your child’s health, it’s always better to be safe than sorry!

Q: The techniques of mask ventilation, direct laryngoscopy, and endotracheal intubation are relatively more difficult in children. why? •Because children's has different anatomy and physiology than adults, which makes above procedures difficult, like: Ø Large head, short neck, and a prominent occiput. Ø Relatively large tongue Ø High and anterior larynx Ø Narrower, long, stiff and u-shaped epiglottis Ø Limited respiratory reserve Ø More prone to airway obstruction from edema due to their smaller airways. Ø Have a higher metabolic rate and can desaturate more quickly during apneic episodes. Oxygen requirements of infants are 6 mL/kg/min (adult 3 mL/kg/min): 2–3 times that of an adult. These factors combine to make pediatric intubation a unique and often more complex challenge than in adults. Pediatric intubation requires specific training and experience, and not all practitioners are equally skilled in pediatric airway management.

The divisions between structure, process, and outcomes are not discrete as they clearly interact. For example, we know that using video laryngoscopy for tracheal intubation has a higher success rate than direct laryngoscopy. https://lnkd.in/gfRvcSqt This means that emergency departments may have to purchase more video laryngoscopy units (structure). The use of the video laryngoscopy (process) can be tracked as a quality metric.
