What a year it has been! Thanks to our team, partners, and supporters, 2024 was a year of unprecedented milestones. Watch the highlights and see what is next for AST SpaceMobile. 📶 #5G#ASTS#SatelliteToMobile#DirectToCell#DirectToDevice
The following are opinions of my own in my personal capacity. They do not promote a particular company and speak to general market trends. Also not financial advice.
There's an emerging market developing that will provide broadband and 5g wireless connectivity direct to devices and small IoT devices as supplemental coverage from space (SCS) satellites completely eliminating dead zones. To close the link budget (transmit to and from a receiver) the larger distance to space requires either large satellites or large receivers (satellite dishes or large sat phones) as compared to terrestrial towers and wifi routers which are much closer and therefore can connect to smaller devices. With the adoption of launch companies using reusable stage 1 rockets, the cost to send payload has decreased by an order of 10 and continues to decline allowing heavier and heavier payloads to be financially feasible. (SpaceX, Rocketlab, Intuitive Machines, ULA, Blue Origin, etc) This has enabled companies to launch very large satellites (600-1800 sqft) to be put into orbit and allows the receiver to be smaller which has the potential to completely revolutionize entire industries. AST appears to be leading here, but future versions of Starlink, Project Kuiper and others are nipping at their heels.
For the transportation sector, I can think of a number of use cases that a ubiquitous 5g/broadband worldwide coverage could be applied to including:
- connected and automous vehicles (CAVs) including DOT or DPW fleet management
- remote monitoring (video or lidar) of critical but remote chokepoints such as bridges, tunnels, mountain passes, rock, mud slide and avalanche prone areas, high fog/blizzard areas, etc.
- remote monitoring and communications of traffic signals, portable and stationary changeable message signs or other dynamic roadway motorist information infrastructure. (PCMS and CMS)
- Emergency Vehicle Response - including emergency SOS for reporting (already available with Apple and Globalstar) and Patient medical records for Ambulances.
Thinking about transit agencies, I know sometimes the GPS trackers on our fleet (automatic vehicle locators -AVL) lose connectivity in urban canyons and I'm wondering if SCS can help with this.
It's an exciting market to watch grow and it's predicted that one of the vendors who appears to be in the lead, AST Space Mobile is about 18-24 months away from a 24/7 broadband coverage in the continental US. It's impressive to see the progress of these companies and interesting to follow and see how the market matures in future years.
What other transportation or other industry use cases exist that ubiquitous 5g/broadband enables?

🚀 🚀 AST SpaceMobile ($ASTS) is again a top gainer in the market, following the successful launch of its first five commercial satellites, called BlueBirds, on September 12, 2024. The company secured additional strategic investments from major telecom companies like AT&T, Verizon, Google, and Vodafone this year and signed new commercial agreements with these partners and the U.S. government. ASTS also has over 3,400 patents and patent-pending claims for its technology and operates state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities in Texas.

And Sino-Brazilian space relations take another big step forward, as Thousand Sails #constellation operator Spacesail announces a cooperation agreement with Brazil’s TELEBRAS S.A. 🇨🇳 🇧🇷 🛰️
The MoU calls for services in Brazil by 2026, with Spacesail hoping to help close the country’s digital divide.
A reminder that Spacesail has launched 36 NGSO #comms#satellites in the past few months, with plans for more before end of year

I really enjoyed taking part in this PA Consulting session on how we communicate the importance of space to life on Earth.
Effects from space-based technologies are global in reach and therefore geopolitical in nature. It is vital that we communicate to international audiences why Britain as a Space Power matters to them, in order to support the UK's objectives to protect people and planet, boost prosperity and understand our Universe.
There is already a recognition in Government that there is a need to communicate the UK’s role in space to an international audience. The National Space Strategy (NSS) In Action report, commits the UK to “deliver a single narrative to better communicate the government’s ambitions and activities in the space sector across all our economic, national security, and diplomatic interests.”
The UK is already a Soft Power superpower with our Higher Education and scientific achievements driving positive international perceptions (look at the Soft Power Index and the Nation Brands Index). However, these attributes haven't translated to the UK being perceived globally as a key player in the space domain.
As a key destination for space investment, a key member of the European Space Agency - ESA, the world's second largest manufacturer of satellites, and a global leader in the responsible use of outer space, the UK has a great story to tell on space.

🌌 The UK space industry has yet to fully convey the significance of space. A strategic PR campaign could hold the key to reshaping the narrative, creating deeper public appreciation.
🤝 By placing the UK public at the forefront of this and fostering collaboration among academia, industry, and government, we can reignite passion, ambition, and investment to positively impact the economy and society.
Read about the themes that emerged from our recent roundtable discussion alongside UK Space Command, UK Space Agency, Department for Science, Innovation and Technology, UKspace industry leaders and our fantastic guest speaker Trevor Beattie, a prominent figure in UK advertising and film production, who shared his remarkable experience of being a crew member on Virgin Galactic 04.
