Firefly Aerospace, Inc., an end-to-end space transportation company, today announced a new agreement to host the Klepsydra Artificial Intelligence (AI) application on Firefly's Elytra vehicle that will launch aboard Alpha later this year. By serving as an edge computing platform in space, Elytra is equipped to support a variety of hosted software applications with real-time data processing on orbit. "Edge computing in space is the key to overcome critical bandwidth challenges that come with downlinking massive volumes of data from spacecraft to ground stations on Earth," said Jana Spruce, Vice President of Spacecraft. "Rather than relaying all this data to the ground, Elytra's edge compute platform enables onboard data processing to support real-time decision making and a wide range of autonomous applications, such as space domain awareness, anomaly detection, and vision navigation."

What HEO does feels like magic. Using existing satellites to image other space objects moving at relative velocities reaching 15 km/s (145 times faster than an F1 car!), from ~20-200 kilometres away. Until a few years ago, no commercial company was doing this. But with the dramatic rise in satellites in space, people want to know - What something is and what it's doing - Is there something wrong If it’s happening in space, there’s a non-Earth image for that. April 2024: Travelling at 17,500 miles per hour nearly 250 miles above Earth’s surface orbits the #InternationalSpaceStation (#ISS). And onboard buzzes three of its arguably cutest passengers: the Astrobees. Named Honey, Bumble, and Queen, these cube-shaped free-flying robots are pushing the boundaries of automation and sensors research in space. Launched in 2018, the #Astrobees are a platform for researchers to test out automation and robotic technologies in space. The robots primarily reside in the space station’s Japanese Experiment Module (aka JEM or the Kibo module), ready to be called upon for experiments or student coding competitions. They have been used to test everything from control algorithms to robotic arms. The most recent Astrobee experiment launched last month aboard #SpaceX’s 30th Commercial Resupply Mission, is pushing sensor and automation research to the next level with a test of new in space scanning algorithms.
