The history of surgical lasers is fascinating. Although many types of medical lasers have impacted science and industry, few have done more to revolutionize healthcare than the CO2 surgical laser. Laser technology, an acronym for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation, was first envisioned by Albert Einstein in 1917. It wasn’t until the 1960s that the CO2 surgical laser was conceived by an individual named Kumar Patel. In 1963, while working at Bell Labs, Patel created a machine to usher in a new era of progress in science, medicine, and industry.
