Being mentored by the most highly regarded comedy director in television history, helped me become the speaker trainer I am today. I was struck by Jay Sandrich, a 5-time Emmy award winner and director of The Cosby Show, by his humbleness and commitment to helping others to succeed in a very competitive industry. I had the privilege of working with Jay in 1984 on the first season of Cosby. He told me that he owed his success to others. Remembering how people helped him start his own career, he invited me to watch him direct the 5 camera shoot from the control room. A place where only the show's producers and technical crew were allowed. We would tape 2 shows in the NBC Brooklyn studio in front of live audiences and each show would go on for hours. We never got through whole scenes without having to stop and redo a particular line. Bill would stop the tape often and Jay would later pick the best shots in the editing room. Jay was a master in how to get the most out of his actors. I learned a lot about the art of improvisation in presentations. Jay taught me that the key was to stay on script as much as possible and see where that takes you. He would let Bill improvise. (Not that Jay had a choice!) Like many clients I work with, Bill had a fear of over-rehearsing. A lot of the show was not in the script. He would often improvise. I teach my clients how to BALANCE staying on script and being able to improvise to keep the presentation relaxed and fresh. Another thing Jay said to me was "If they notice the camerawork they're missing the performance." I share with my clients how to use stagecraft (movement, gestures, and vocal variety), in a way that the audience doesn't even realize you are using them. This way the content is expressed, without being distracted by HOW it's presented. Just like Jay created a safe place for his actors, I also create a safe, enjoyable and failure-free environment for my clients to become the best they can be. Just written an article for Broadcast asking why there are still so few women on comedy panel shows: https://lnkd.in/e_2fgT36 Behind a pay wall, so these are the key facts: 1. In 2014, Danny Cohen made what appeared to be a radical suggestion to some, that every BBC panel show should include at least one woman. He clearly envisaged that this modest proposal would be the first step towards parity, but in fact a year later the gender splitwas exactly the same, and the following year had only shifted very slightly. 2. And since 2019, the figures have actually stalled. 3. By 2007 both BBC Radio and commercial TV were ahead of BBC TV. BBC TV has improved since, but it has stayed behind BBC Radio (mostly Radio 4) and commercial TV.” 4. One of the frequent claims made is that women don’t want to go on these shows. But this surely is not a tenable argument or defence? If a show is so unpleasant that a woman doesn’t want to go on it, then is the onus not on the production to make changes? If an office environment operated like this, it would never be seen as acceptable to say: “Actually it’s just that women don’t want to work here”.

Groundbreaking series. Since Breaking Bad, Madmen, and Better Call Saul this the one that changes a lot in the terms what you can do with a TV series, even this is a limited series, but to turn the original story in 8 one hour episodes is a creative feat. Especially the writing, directing, cinematography, editing, use of music, and acting are superb and to certain extent visionary. Congrats to the crew and the talent! The collaboration is a step above many good TV shows, e.g. like a miniseries Masters of the Air from AppleT+ that is very good, but still below Ripley. It's not just the talent, actors, but the whole creative output is a school in master filmmaking and miniseries genre too.

She’s: - Unfazed by operating in an old boys’ club - Incredibly well-prepared - Dry and hilarious - Smart as hell - Big heart Am I interested in working in politics? Not even slightly. *shudder*. But am I inspired by her? 100%. She represents everything that I admire. In fact, whenever I face a challenge at work I like to ponder - What would CJ do? Which TV character inspires you at work?
