Let's put some numbers to this argument I've seen made recently by Keith Patridge, Joaquin S., Rio Grande Valley Partnership, and others about RGV cities co-investing in regional economic development. According to the latest reports available (2022) from the Texas Comptroller, there are at least nine sales-tax funded economic development corporations in the RGV: Brownsville, Edinburg, Harlingen, McAllen, Mission, Pharr, Rio Grande City, San Juan, and Weslaco. Based on their self-reported 2022 data, combining the resources of just those nine entities would yield approximately: $73 million in sales tax revenue $137 million in total revenue (includes bonds, grants, etc.) $57 million in total expenses for economic development activities $96 million in cash on hand (reported as fund balance) For perspective, the most well-funded EDC in Texas in 2022 was Frisco, with $68 million in sales tax revenue and $105 million in total revenue. Imagine what an annual budget of $50M or more could accomplish working on behalf of the entire region. #OneRegionOneVoice, indeed. The impact of incremental revenue cannot be understated in the event space. Usage of inventory features like Seat level pricing (SLP) and platinum have been integral to this incremental revenue strategy. Especially in non-traditional events like international tournaments, celebrity matches, concerts, etc. Newer features like SLP and platinum are an entirely new way to price inventory than they’re used to. It took some convincing internally with client partners and clients to initially adopt. Clients trusted their client partners and our product team to deliver. The results speak for themselves 👏🏼

Do you have a no D!£%head policy? Turns out it’s good for business. Yesterday I had the privilege of listening to the Chair of the Welsh Rugby Union Richard Collier-Keywood talk eloquently about the important Welsh cultural asset he is now responsible for and the need for it to serve all stakeholders i.e. benefit society beyond the bottom line. In business it’s known as CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) which emerged as a concept in the 1960s. Back then it was seen as an altruistic means of doing more with a business than just making money, but it was assumed it would involve sacrificing profit to achieve it. The growing evidence shows this is not the case. Being environmentally responsible, inclusive and serving of all stakeholders (customers, employees, investors, the environment and wider society) builds a strong brand, customer engagement, profit and also investment opportunities. The All Blacks have an NDH (No D!£%head) policy. They clean their own dressing rooms, carry their own bags and essentially show humility, accountability and a recognition of all the stakeholders in their organisation. For me, corporate social responsibility boils down to common sense, respect and humility. It’s good to see those leading our national game going forward aspire to the same ethos. And at a time of such high attrition in business in general, would it not be best to have a smart business model that ensures that everyone in the eco system is incentivised to see the venture succeed?
