Last week I attended the much-anticipated 3rd Congress of Innovation organised by APD, a key event in the #innovation sector in #Spain. I went in with high expectations and, I must say, the experience was a mix of inspiration and the expected. 🌟 Highlights: IMHO some sessions truly stood out, sparking curiosity and challenging conventional thinking. For example, Alfons Cornella's speech on liminal spaces as a catalyst for innovation reminded us why he's always a crowd-puller. 'Innovation is an activity dedicated to value delivery, not a tech-related one'. Second, Ane Insausti Altuna's leading conversation into quantum computing possibilities together with Multiverse Computing painted a vivid picture of what's on the technology horizon in the next years. Third, approach of large corporations to innovation to deliver more value, with special kudos for Juan Cumbrado (MAPFRE) talking about value propositions deployment and risk-taking in a regulated environment. 🔍 Mixed feelings: While some talks delivered good value, others didn't rise above the typical jargon and clichés like "the greatest risk is not taking one" or "innovation has been always in our DNA". Besides, it’s disheartening when content occasionally moved towards sales rather than substance, which isn't what I anticipated from a congress of this caliber. 🔬 Emerging trends: The most intriguing takeaway? AI is the prehistory, #quantumcomputing seems to be no longer a distant dream but inheriting the hype. The discussions around quantum computing and its applications suggested a near shift to new computational paradigms, although I'm still unsure about that. What I have read so far suggests quantum is more between hope and hype. It’s an exciting time to be involved in orgs' #transformation and the power to reshape the society challenges for the good. In a wide-ranging discussion at SXSW 2024, futurist Ray Kurzweil painted a vivid picture of humanity's technological future, predicting a world where human intelligence merges with artificial intelligence to create unprecedented capabilities. Kurzweil, long known for his accurate predictions about technological progress, stood firm on his forecast that by 2029, artificial intelligence will pass the Turing Test and achieve human-level intelligence. The conversation covered Kurzweil's concept of "singularity," which he predicts will occur in 2045 when technological growth becomes uncontrollable and irreversible, leading to unfathomable changes in human civilization. Kurzweil argued that exponential growth in computing power and advancements in nanotechnology and brain-machine interfaces will drive us toward this transformative event. Kurzweil's optimism was evident throughout the discussion. He predicted that those who are "diligent" could achieve "longevity escape velocity" by 2029, potentially living for hundreds of years. He envisioned a future where human consciousness could be backed up and restored, and where the distinction between biological and artificial intelligence blurs. However, the conversation also touched on these advancements' ethical implications and potential dangers. Kurzweil acknowledged the need for safeguards against misuse of powerful technologies like nanotechnology while maintaining his belief that the overall trajectory of technological progress is positive for humanity. Despite the radical nature of his predictions, Kurzweil grounded his vision in observable trends, frequently referencing charts showing exponential growth in various technological and economic indicators.
