Manual handling injuries in the workplace cost UK businesses over £7.6 billion a year. This figure includes lost production, healthcare costs & compensation payments (up to £160k per claim). Approximately 42% of these injuries are musculoskeletal (mainly back related) & often caused by incorrect but avoidable manual handling processes in the business. The HSE says that: 'As an employer, you must protect your workers from the risk of injury from hazardous manual handling in the workplace'. The law sets out how employers must deal with risks from manual handling: 1. Avoid hazardous manual handling, so far as reasonably practicable 2. Assess the risk of injury from any hazardous manual handling operations that cannot be avoided. 3. Reduce the risk of injury from hazardous manual handling to as low as reasonably practicable. At Impact Handling we have a full range of materials handling equipment to reduce the risk of your employees being injured in the workplace & your business being at risk to employee compensation claims. We cover the whole of the UK with industry specialists to assess the materials handling processes in your business. Managing injury risks when securing loads on trucks Peter Thorning and Grant Phillips Workplace Health and Safety Queensland Abstract Securing loads on trucks is a common task in the road freight industry. Anecdotal reports from the trucking industry and work health and safety inspectors suggest that a common type of equipment used – the over-centre lever load binder or ‘dog’ – presents a high risk of injury. This paper examines the risks of using this equipment, alternatives that are available and barriers to uptake of safer equipment. The paper also gives the preliminary findings of an intervention campaign by Workplace Health and Safety Queensland (WHSQ), which was aimed at identifying areas of highest risk and, at the same time, raising awareness of these risks and ways to reduce them within the road freight industry. The results show that despite safer alternatives being available, dogs and other high risk equipment and practices continue to be used throughout the road freight industry.

𝗩𝗶𝗯𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 Vibration hazards in the workplace often fly under the radar, but they can lead to serious health issues if not properly managed. When we talk about vibration in occupational health and safety, it’s usually split into two types: hand-arm vibration (HAVS) and whole-body vibration (WBV). 🔵 𝗛𝗮𝗻𝗱-𝗮𝗿𝗺 𝘃𝗶𝗯𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 (𝗛𝗔𝗩𝗦) occurs when workers use tools like jackhammers, chainsaws, or grinders. Prolonged exposure can cause: 🔹Tingling and numbness in the fingers 🔹Loss of grip strength 🔹Vascular problems like "vibration white finger" 🔹Permanent damage to nerves and muscles 🔴 𝗪𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗲-𝗯𝗼𝗱𝘆 𝘃𝗶𝗯𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 (𝗪𝗕𝗩), on the other hand, affects workers who operate heavy machinery, like drivers of trucks or tractors. It can lead to: 🔸Lower back pain 🔸Fatigue 🔸Digestive issues 🔸Increased risk of injury due to reduced concentration To protect workers from these hazards, employers need to: ● Assess vibration risks: Measure vibration exposure and compare it with safety thresholds set by regulations. ● Provide suitable equipment: Use low-vibration tools and maintain them regularly to reduce the impact. ● Implement administrative controls: Rotate tasks, schedule regular breaks, and train workers on the risks of vibration. ● Use personal protective equipment: Anti-vibration gloves can help, but they’re not a cure-all.
