Where are we 60 years after Russell and Burch originated the #3Rs concept? In 60 Years of the 3Rs Symposium: Lessons Learned and the Road Ahead, Michael Balls says we are in the “age of disappointment.” Balls believes there is resistance and a low commitment to change, as well as a poor understanding of the importance of replacement. In parallel, researchers continue to withdraw new drugs from clinical trials and are failing to treat major human diseases. Most advances in the regulation of animal use for experiments and validation of #NAMs took place in the past 20 years, but where to go now? 🗺️ Katya Tsaioun, director of Evidence-Based Toxicology Collaboration, says that evidence-based methods could transform the drug discovery and development processes. 🔍   Thomas Hartung, director of the Center for Alternatives to Animal Testing (CAAT), at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, believes that 💻 big data and #AI will show the limitations of animal testing and will prevent ‘massive waste’ of animal lives and resources. It is time to focus on education, communication, strategic planning, and resources. Martin Stephens of CAAT asks for an international strategy for full #animalreplacement with a timeline.
