We need to include parents prospectively in planning programs MEANT to offer assistance. In the past five years, screening for social drivers of health has become pervasive in many healthcare settings, especially primary care. This team asked parents what they thought. They report significant parental reservations about PAYOR CODING of material resource needs and concerns that what may be permanent but opaque documentation could impact child welfare involvement and other social outcomes. Involving parents in #childhealth initiatives early and often allows us to really #putkidsfirst. #familypartners

The Annie E. Casey Foundation's latest report, Engaging and Supporting Kinship Caregivers, shares findings around the methods and time frames in which child welfare agencies involve relatives in case planning. For instance, nearly all (42) states require family team meetings at some point during child welfare involvement. These meetings — which include caseworkers, relatives and close family friends — help create plans to support families and keep children safe. It makes sense to make decisions with those who have the child's best interests at heart. As my colleague Todd Lloyd said best, “Relatives often have a deeper understanding of a family’s strengths and challenges." Ally to all seeking equity & justice. Advocate for youth & families with a focus on foster, kinship, fictive kin & hidden foster care. Proponent for all animals & the planet. Fierce human rights champion.
#Kinshipcare #FictiveKincare #Support #FamilyPreservation #Fostercare Studies show that youth placed with family members or a supportive adult known to the youth leads to much better outcomes across many metrics. However, policies and protocols to prioritize kin placements are often not followed. Kin caregivers also face many obstacles while going through the caregiver approval process. The US Child Welfare System must initiate updated training, policies, procedures, and protocols to resolve these issues. Kin caregivers need support, but frequently they do not get any assistance. We must increase support and services to kin caregivers and the youth they have opened their homes to. It is best for the child, the caregiver, and the community.
