"A pig with makeup on is still a pig." Participating in the panel discussion on "How Can Extended Reality (XR) Revolutionize Customer Experience (CX)?" with Umer Khan M., Dr. Humberto R. Noguera, and Darryl Togashi (our venerable moderator) at the Internet 2.0 Conference last week was a memorable experience. We had perspectives from the world of education, cybersecurity, medicine, systems design, the history of computer science, and entrepreneurship. When faced with such questions and conversations, I always try to start by applying fluid intelligence. It helps one dissociate from the hype surrounding the subject matter. The critical component of the question is the word 'revolutionize.' That's the fulcrum. So, from a first principles perspective, the question is: How Can 🅰 Revolutionize 🅱? There is a current state for 🅱, and 🅰 must lead to a future state (which may be a moving 🎯), which should be a sea change. The trade-offs of 🅰's application and the efficiency of execution will lead to outcomes on a spectrum going from Makeup on a Pig to Saddle on a Horse. I will replace🅰and 🅱with the counterparts from the original question to bring the context back, but you can see that the spectrum is a general framework. 1️⃣ Makeup on a Pig This is close to Innovation Theater (see Steve Blank, https://lnkd.in/gGAHd4zq): fad-chasing applications of XR, implemented without much thought to the current state of customer experience. For example, consider an Apparel Brand or e-commerce player in Apparel implementing a virtual fitting room. If the physical clothes are of shitty quality (vis-à-vis the price) to begin with or the last mile logistics are shoddy, no matter how sleek that fitting room is, the customer experience will still be crap. Hence the opening line of this post. 2️⃣ Patch on a Donkey This comes close to Sustaining Innovation (Clay Christensen) in CX by applying XR. It is a plug that improves the experience but doesn't transform it. It may arise from the necessity of trust-building with consumers (with the tech): a baby step. For example, XR applications that overlay design elements or furniture on physical spaces can help fasten the shortlisting of options, increasing the speed to value for interior design firms and the customers but not wholly supplanting the in-person interactions required or desired. Think less swatches. 3️⃣ Saddle on a Horse These would be genuinely disruptive applications. If you think you are building such a product, please let me know. I invest time, network, and capital in such curious ideas. Do comment on this framework. How does this apply in your industry? How can we improve it to make it actionable? What existing innovation concepts does it fit with? Thank You! #innovation

Augmented Reality (AR) is transforming the landscape of Fashion Retail with AI-powered Virtual Try-Ons. This innovative technology offers customers a new way to discover the perfect fit and style without physically trying on clothes. By visualizing garments in real-time, it empowers shoppers to make informed decisions, ultimately reducing return rates and enhancing the overall shopping experience. Example of Implementation: Burberry is setting a remarkable example in the industry by integrating AR into its online shopping platform. Their use of 3D models and virtual try-ons enables customers to make accurate purchasing choices, reflecting the brand's commitment to luxury and innovation. This seamless integration not only enhances the shopping journey but also solidifies Burberry's reputation as a forward-thinking brand. The benefits of AR in Fashion Retail are substantial: - Improved Customer Satisfaction: Virtual try-ons eliminate uncertainties in online shopping, leading to higher satisfaction levels and increased confidence in purchases. - Reduced Return Rates: By showcasing realistic previews of clothing, AR technology minimizes returns related to size or fit issues. - Enhanced Engagement: AR tools create immersive shopping experiences, prolonging website visits and boosting conversion rates. #AugmentedReality #FashionRetail #VirtualTryOns #CustomerExperience

Empowering brands worldwide to launch and scale immersive experiences through spatial computing, AI & XR / Founder & CEO / Advisory Board / Published Author / Keynote Speaker / Angel Investor
How do we create MAGIC for retail with XR? Embarking on a journey into the world of skincare, I recently immersed myself in the enchanting universe of a beauty brand. Armed with only my customer perspective, I set out to visualize and capture the essence of this experience through XR. No brand guidelines or playbook—just the magic of discovery. Applying the skincare product at bedtime became a nightly ritual, and here's how it made me feel: Enchanted, delighted, invigorated—transported into a realm of wonder. The secret? The core ingredient: The Rose. So, I set out to create a spatial experience that encapsulates all of this. The result? A blend of Wonder and Awe, for curated and immersive brand experiences that transcend the ordinary. Key takeaways: 🌟 Wonder and Awe with XR: Your brand experience doesn't have to mimic others. Not everything needs to be a digital twin—it can be entirely out-of-this-world. 🌈 Curate & Immerse: Less is more when it comes to showcasing products. XR allows for transcendence and aspiration. Celebrate your hero product. 🤖 Smart AI Concierge: Imagine having a conversation with a mirror that knows your brand inside out. At Chateauz, our builds include Smart AI Concierge for engaging customer interactions. In Le Rose Chateauz™, simply ask, "Mirror, mirror, on the wall…_____”. Storytelling can be as magical and imaginative as you want it to be. And your brand could be basking in this magical experience, with it fully integrated into your shopping system in days, not months. This intriguing design was created from scratch within five days. Curious? Ask me how. And let's turn your brand into a captivating tale of wonder! #spatialcomputing #brandexperience #xr #icommerce #retailtech

The Future of Digital Experience is Multi-Sensory Imagine you can experience smell, taste, textures and temperature digitally. Digital technology today mainly uses two senses - sight and sound. But it will not be long before we can feel, taste and smell digital objects in a way that is indistinguishable from physical experiences. With the technological advances in extended reality (XR) applications, it is plausible that digital experiences will move from screen-based to sense-based in the near future. Multi-Sensory is the next iteration of digitalisation. With the ever-improving ability of digital technologies to mimic and augment the five human senses, the use of muliti-sensory solutions envisions a world where the digital and physical increasingly merge into one another. In the future, more lightweight and advanced AR glasses and contact lenses will allow users to project digital objects into physical spaces with uncanny levels of realism. Touch will also become more amplified in the era of Haptic Feedback is already available today, but more advanced forms of wearables that replicate the sense of weight and motion in digital objects will also emerge as technologies evolve. Similarly, various early-stage prototypes that replicate the senses of taste and smell also exist, and artificially recreates any flavour on a user’s tongue. . . . Towards a sense-based digital experience economy From immersive entertainment to digital malls and online social gatherings, digital sensory experiences have the potential to radically reshape industries. They will open entirely new avenues for value creation, unlock novel ways for brands to connect with consumers, and will transform how we perceive the life around us. In the years to come, digital malls may be able to offer smell, texture, and taste to make online shopping experiences engage with consumers and add incremental understanding and alignment to a brands brick-and-mortar stores. Additionally Digital taste manipulation could revolutionise the food industry altogether by offering new taste experiences without any health disadvantages. In media and entertainment, films and advertisements could be experienced in an entirely new, fully immersive way. Get in touch with Mark or Neil if we can support you in your Multi-Sensory Digital Experience. #multisensory #digitalexperience #sensebaseddigital. #innovation #extendedreality #haptic #experiential #artofthepossible
