Singapore-based venture capital (VC) firm Golden Gate Ventures landed its first $100 million MENA fund Wednesday, with $20 million in commitments from Qatari investors, as the firm plans to break into the MENA region. First funding Anchor investors of the fund include Al Khor Holding W.L.L, Al @Attiya Group and Sheikh Jassim Bin Jabor Al Thani, a statement from Golden Gate Ventures showed. This is the first international VC fund to be established and managed within Qatar. It will focus on powering startups in sectors such as alternative energy, green technology, business-to-business (B2B) artificial intelligence (AI), and energy-related deep tech. Other sectors that the fund will cover include fintech, health tech, and edtech. Bahrain-based alternative asset manager Investcorp said on Monday that it has led Salla’s pre-IPO fundraising with a $130m investment ahead of the Saudi Arabian software startup listing on the local exchange. The fundraising had the participation of Sanabil Investment, a unit of Saudi sovereign wealth fund Public Investment Fund, venture capital firm STV, and Salla’s existing shareholders. The asset manager, in a statement, said that the deal was made through its Investcorp Saudi Pre-IPO Growth Fund LP – a $500m fund that’s focused on pre-IPO companies in Saudi Arabia. “We see great interest in the potential of Saudi companies to IPO, especially as scale-ups and unicorns demonstrate local and regional success. Salla has managed to grow exponentially and deliver best-in-class margins,” said Walid Majdalani, Investcorp head of Emerging Markets Private Equity. The Canadian Venture Capital & Private Equity Association (CVCA) has recognized Startup TNT as the most active pre-seed and seed stage investor in Western Canada in its 2023 Canadian Venture Capital Market Overview. With 16 pre-seed investments, Startup TNT holds the title of the country's leading pre-seed investor.
