Delegate Rae Cousins, who represents Virginia's 79th district, is a proud supporter of our Evans-Haynes Burn Center. She worked with our team and fellow lawmakers to help pass a proclamation declaring the first full week of February “Burn Awareness Week” across Virginia. She recently toured VCU Medical Center's helipad, emergency department and the burn center. 📷 by Elizabeth Shelley, Evans-Haynes Burn Center

Follow BIST as they join Victim and Survivors of Crime week, highlighting the challenges individuals with ABI, as a result of IPV, face with navigating the legal system. Highlights will include sharing information on their valuable and unique resource, ABI Justice. https://lnkd.in/gkrix--c.
As we enter Victims and Survivors of Crime Week, the Brain Injury Society of Toronto (BIST) is proud to join in and concentrate our efforts on a vital yet often neglected matter—the intersection of intimate partner violence (IPV) and brain injuries, and the challenges they pose when navigating the legal landscape, both for survivors and legal professionals. Our focus is on advancing support and resources for victims in Ontario, particularly those affected by IPV-related brain injuries. We will be sharing resources from our website, ABIJustice.org, emphasizing the critical necessity for continuous support for women impacted by IPV and brain injury within the legal system. Our goal is to raise awareness of this urgent issue and ensure comprehensive care and support for those affected. Join us in bringing attention to this important cause. Join our Brain Injury and Justice Training on May 21st at 2 PM. https://lnkd.in/gZ6svbbq

Just one question can save a child's life: ask if there are unlocked guns where your child is visiting. Temple Health is part of a 59-hospital coalition across Philadelphia, Southeastern Pennsylvania, Delaware and Southern New Jersey working together to help reduce injuries and deaths caused by firearms–which is the leading cause of death for kids in the US. Our goal is to empower caregivers, parents, and communities to speak up about gun safety. Get tips for starting this conversation. https://lnkd.in/edehhX96

Expansion is good.
Hey Facebook Friends – This year we are expanding our brief Restorative Justice Intervention “Crime Victims Impact/Emotional Hygiene Classes” within four new Colorado Department of Corrections (CODOC) facilities: La Vista, Four Mile, Fremont and Centennial as well as offering our powerful “RJ Healing/Support Circles.” It’s been a hectic week of facilities walk-throughs and meeting with our new point of contacts. Thanks to the many CODOC staff that made these site visits and walk-throughs possible. A special thanks to Leigh Burrows, Tom Werlich, Dallas, Sam and Cheryl. We look forward to our continue partnership.

Creative Director, StoryMine | Video stories created for health and science organizations | Stories that teach and transform
We worked with Dr. Punch and his team on a video project on harm reduction and opioid use disorder. The work their team is doing on bullet related injury at The BRIC is completely inspiring and in Dr. Punch's words "radical." Watch this short video (not by us, but great!) to quickly learn a bit about what they're doing.
Watch and share this inspiring video highlighting the transformative work of Dr. LJ Punch and the Bullet Related Injury Clinic (BRIC), a grantee of the Kaiser Permanente Center for Gun Violence Research and Education (powered by The Health Alliance for Violence Intervention). Located in St. Louis, BRIC is a community-based clinic that empowers individuals and communities to heal from bullet injuries. Founded by trauma surgeon Dr. LJ Punch, the clinic offers trauma-informed, accessible, and culturally competent care to gunshot victims and their families. The Center has invested nearly $7 million in community-led research, innovative health approaches, and promising interventions to protect the health and safety of our most affected communities. Stay tuned as we spotlight more grantees in the coming weeks and months! In our article "Call to Action: The Rise of Pediatric Gun Violence During the COVID-19 Pandemic", we found that 47% of pediatric patients who experienced firearm injuries have also experienced a traumatic event outside of the original 10 adverse childhood experiences. Every child deserves a safe community to thrive within. Lets work together to end the cycle of violence and create a future where children feel safe and empowered. Michigan Public Health and University of Michigan Institute for Firearm Injury Prevention researchers are working together to better tailor firearm safety approaches and communications to meet the needs of parents with young children. A new project, called the Supporting All Families through Education and Responsible Management and Storage (SAFE ARMS) study, is a three-year CDC-funded research project that focuses on understanding how parents of children 0-5 years old think about firearm safety. Alison Miller, a professor of Health Behavior and Health Education at Michigan Public Health, and Hsing-Fang Hsieh, research assistant professor at the University of Michigan Institute for Firearm Injury Prevention and Michigan Public Health alumna, serve as co-principal investigators of SAFE ARMS.
