Building relationships with students is foundational to fostering an inclusive and supportive learning atmosphere. When educators engage students in dialogue and actively listen to their perspectives, they help cultivate trust and mutual respect. Restorative justice practices encourage these relationships, enabling students to openly discuss their feelings and experiences in a safe space. This not only aids in conflict resolution but also facilitates emotional growth and accountability. Nurturing these connections is essential for creating a positive school culture where every student feels valued and empowered to succeed. #restorativepractice #upliftmovement

💡 Fact sheet: Many schools use exclusionary discipline—such as suspensions and expulsions—with the intention of reducing misbehavior and improving school safety. However, research shows that the use of exclusionary discipline ultimately increases misbehavior, undermines school climate, reduces achievement, and increases dropout and incarceration rates. In addition, long-standing research documents the disproportionate use of punitive discipline practices for students of color and students with disabilities. As an alternative, many schools have sought to replace harsh disciplinary policies with restorative practices. #RestorativePractices #SchoolClimate https://lnkd.in/gQEPFDpp

Thoughts: this news story broke yesterday in the DMV. What are your thought on a SRO’s being assigned to elementary schools? Is it better to add those resources to secondary level? Does/ should the school system have a say in determining where SRO’s are placed? Who is ultimately responsible for school safety? LE or the school system? While this is local issue at this point, it seems law enforcement in some jurisdictions want to be more hands on in school security. How do school systems/ school safety professionals/ supers proactively deal with these politically charged debates? This type of disagreement doesn’t seem good for anyone. This post is a call to action for educators to create a safe and inclusive environment for our children and young people. As parents, we want our children to feel valued and supported at school. Unfortunately, this is not always the case. One parent shared that her daughter felt "gaslit, uncomfortable, and as though she didn't matter" because she didn't fit the school's academic ethos. This is unacceptable. It is crucial that we prioritize the emotional wellbeing of our students and create a school culture that celebrates diversity and individuality. Education is not one-size-fits-all, and our schools should reflect that. Let's work together to ensure that all students feel seen, heard, and valued. #InclusiveEducation #DiversityMatters

To develop safe and healthy school environments, schools must be able to respond to bullying and harassment appropriately and take deliberate action to prevent it. This includes incidences where the bullying taking place is based on or related to a student’s identity, such as their race, ethnicity, national origin, sex, gender, religion or disability status. Students across Texas have been increasingly reporting alarming examples of identity-based bullying in schools – fueled in part by misinformation spread as a result of recent efforts to attack and undermine diversity, equity and inclusion efforts in education. https://lnkd.in/gf4YgAPj
