Over the past year, we’ve experienced an astonishing 112% increase in demand at the Oakland Food Pantry. Yes, you read that correctly. Four years after the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, the question remains: what is driving this significant rise? Two years ago, we saw a surge in need following the reduction of SNAP benefits, but this past year, the impact has been compounded by other economic factors. The cost of living has skyrocketed, especially when it comes to groceries. In Pennsylvania, food prices have surged by an average of 8.2%. Consider the following: a gallon of milk now costs $4.56, a loaf of bread is priced at $3.21, eggs are nearing $4 a dozen, and chicken is approximately $5 per pound. Even for those who budget carefully, a week's worth of groceries for a family of four can easily surpass $100. The result? Supplemental services, like food pantries, have become a lifeline for more individuals than ever before. Food insecurity is no longer confined to the unemployed, elderly, or disabled—it’s affecting a much broader spectrum of people, many of whom were self-sufficient just two years ago. This growing need underscores the importance of community support during these challenging times, for this, I am so thankful for the work my team does every week at Community Human Services!

It was an honor to serve RaiseUp Families as their Executive Director for nearly 4 years. In that time, the organization experienced unprecedented growth: ✅ Expanded Board of Directors by 50% ✅ Doubled the number of families (clients) being served ✅ Client outcomes improved by 100% (average income increase in signature 9-month HandUp program went from 35% - 71%) ✅ Client graduation rate improved from 80% to 91% ✅ Revenue growth from $450,000 to $1,000,015 (donations from private sources) These outcomes are a result of the Board of Directors and staff working together towards a common goal, each person utilizing their unique skills and abilities in their individual role to help the bus arrive at its desired destination. Shoe us your love by joining the ROC Stop Seizures Shoe Drive Challenge. We are challenging you to go through your closets and storage and to ask your family, neighbors and friends for for gently worn, used or new shoes of any age, gender, and size. The shoes in turn will help ROC Stop Seizures to raise funds to further its mission to raise awareness for those with Epilepsy and Veterans with Battle Induced Seizure Disorders but will also help developing countries to create jobs and get shoes to those who are in need. Once you have collected 25 pairs of shoes, get in touch with ROC Stop Seizures so that we can arrange how to get the shoes from you and to give you some ROC Stop Seizures swag for completing the challenge. The work we do in our communities extends beyond the project site. While working on the Wildfire Hardening Project in Weed, California, 1884 Line Co., a subsidiary of Kiewit Transmission Services Inc., learned of the city’s efforts to raise funds for a new water truck, crucial for this wildfire-prone area. Understanding the importance, the project team donated a state-of-the-art Multiquip Water Buffalo – a modern water trailer designed to enhance wildfire control capabilities significantly and aid firefighting efforts. Mike Kiggins, President of Kiewit Transmission Services Inc., emphasized the importance of this donation, especially for a community that welcomed them during project operations. “Building work within a community goes beyond the physical structures; it’s about fostering relationships and providing support. By becoming an integral part of the community, we can ensure our efforts truly benefit and uplift those we serve. Donating a state-of-the-art Multiquip Water Buffalo to a high-risk town is crucial for enhancing wildfire control capabilities, and it will significantly aid firefighting efforts, providing essential support to protect lives and properties."
