Becca and I stopped by the local drive-in and got a root beer float the other day. I always take home some root beer by itself when we go. You can see the product in this video. B & K Root Beer Stand is one of those old school drive-in, eat in your car type places from the 50’s and 60’s. When your product and your brand are so good and so old, You can sell your it in clear plastic milk jugs, And people still know what it is. B&K has been in business for 85 years. This is an amazing accomplishment for ANY businesss. Average age of a Fortune 500 company? 15 years. That’s an amazing figure to me. That means there are things I can learn from a business like B&K that I can’t learn from one of the big companies. IMHO, the first place to start is the product. It’s the best root beer I’ve ever tasted, and that fact has kept me coming back my entire life. Literally. When Becca and I bought this house, one of the deciding factors was its proximity to our B&K Rootbeer Stand. No joke. It wasn’t the most important thing, but it was a deciding factor. Yesterday I attended the Foot for Thought: Spring Parade 2024 at Artis. It was hosted by the The Net Positive Partner Program with a deep dive into the footprint of our current food system and how we can take a step towards a more sustainable future of food. It was an impressive day! The day started with Maarten Oonk telling about how we should look at what can be done, not looking at a confirmation of the problem. Courage, commitment and conviction is needed. After that there was an interesting conversation with Niels Boetje (Cargill) and Babs Dijkshoorn (Achmea). We need to work together within and outside the company throughout the chain. A collaboration through sectors is needed to make a bold move. An interesting question asked by the audience was how to divide time between fixing daily tasks vs. net positive goals. The reaction was that 93% of the time we work on things we need to fix today, 6% we work on what we need to fix tomorrow and we have very little time for priorities for the longer term. Key message: be bold. During the day we had two break-outs. One of the break-outs I attended was from the Food Cabinet - creative agency for good food. Interesting to learn more about 6 food profiles based on how much time, money, and effort the consumer is willing to invest in the purchasing process versus whether a consumer is more likely to go for the tasty choice or the conscious choice. The day ended with Diederick Croese who told us more about the knowledge of the world (head), knowledge of self (heart) and moral courage (hands). Also interesting to take into account that some people take the goals as a starting point whilst others take the principle as a starting point. To conclude my impression of the day: the key to transformative growth is to see the opportunity space and experiment. What will you do differently tomorrow?

We just wrapped up a fun little campaign for Shades Brewing where we gathered real customers, served them some drinks, and asked them simple fun questions. One of the key objectives of this campaign was to put real faces to the brand while highlighting the brewery itself. We asked customers four questions and then we produced a series of clips. We didn't want to overcomplicate it and we wanted it to be authentic. We also know that not every person can easily get in front of a camera! The key point is always to have a purpose with all creative, even if it's a mini-campaign. #brewery #restaurantmarketing #creativecampaigns

There’s a lot to like about Botrista, Inc. the technology and hardware elements provide a genuinely good solution for QSR and Fast casual Being the grumpy old cynic that I am there are a couple of things to watch ➡️ Anything that is hyping AI so much has distinctly less AI than you’d think ➡️ Celebrating a raise is still weird to me ➡️ The phrase ‘Hyper expansion’ is a cause for concern. I believe Beyond Meat liked that phrase. But on the flip of that ✅ Genuinely a game changer If the supply chain can support the solution ✅ Works equally well for chains and indies ✅ Application across QSR, Fast Casual, Casual Dining, Arenas and events and possibly even casual dining Definitely one to watch and I hope the focus of the team is nailing the US market, using JFC to get their chain element spot on and move on to the next round celebrating some profit. It’s not asset light so the burn on expansion will be real.

Mid-week, you'll find me with a seasn LIGHT and tonic with a wedge of lime OR seasn DARK with ginger ale. For dinner parties, a dry martini with seasn LIGHT and to deal with the Sunday hangover, a spicy bloody mary with seasn DARK.   Weirdest flavour combinations you enjoy: I have a palate for some rather unconventional flavour combinations. Anchovies straight out of the tin? Check. Marmite with orange juice? Surprisingly delightful.
