This species plays a significant role as a vector for diseases such as West Nile and St. Louis Encephalitis. This species prefer breeding in stagnant or slow-moving water, such as ponds and ditches, and are most active during the evening and night. Tuesday was #WorldMosquitoDay 🦟 Observed every year on August 20th, World Mosquito Day commemorates the groundbreaking discovery by Sir Ronald Ross in 1897 that female anopheline mosquitoes are responsible for transmitting malaria between humans. This discovery has shaped our understanding of mosquito-borne diseases and the importance of mosquito control. But did you know that bats are one of nature's most effective mosquito hunters? These amazing creatures can eat up to 1,000 mosquitoes in a single night. A pregnant female bat can even consume her body weight in mosquitos each night! 🦇 To help conserve bats, reduce the need for chemical pesticides, and consider creating bat-friendly habitats in your yard. Put up bat boxes or plant native pollinator spaces. 'A total of 2,504 ticks of 5 species (Ixodes scapularis, Dermacentor variabilis, Amblyomma americanum, Haemaphysalis leporispalustris, and H. longicornis) were collected over 2 yr (2014–2015) in New York City parks. Specimens were collected via tick-dragging, identified to species, and tested for pathogens of human diseases. The causative agents of 5 human diseases (Lyme borreliosis, ehrlichiosis, babesiosis, anaplasmosis, and Rocky Mountain spotted fever) were detected in a subset of samples. Results of this surveillance effort further illustrate that risk of tick-borne disease is considerable even in parks located adjacent to densely populated areas.' To most, a mosquito is just a mosquito. The fact is, there are over 3,500 species with a few species being responsible for the transmission of dreaded diseases such as Malaria, Dengue, Zika, Yellow Fever, Chikungunya and West Nile Virus. Most species are just known to bite without transmitting any diseases thereby being a nuisance. But you really never know which one is biting, so it's important to take the necessary precautions.
