Teen AI Surge: 70% Use Gen AI, Parents in the Dark A new report by Common Sense Media reveals that 70% of US teenagers are using generative AI tools, primarily for school-related tasks. Despite this widespread adoption, 60% of teens report unclear or nonexistent school policies on AI use. Parental awareness lags significantly, with only 37% knowing about their children's AI usage. The study also highlights racial disparities, with Black and Latino teens showing higher AI enthusiasm. Concerningly, Black students face disproportionate accusations of unauthorized AI use. Despite mixed feelings about AI's impact, most teens believe that learning to use these tools should be mandatory in schools, underscoring the need for clearer educational policies and guidance. Here are some age-appropriate goals for teaching with and about AI: 📔 Lower Primary: Understand that AI is not a real person. Be careful about using language that anthropomorphizes AI tools. 📔 Upper Primary: Focus on developing problem-solving skills. Tovah Klein reminds us that an overreliance on AI can short-circuit students’ development of problem-solving skills. 📔 Lower Secondary: Build on students' developing critical and abstract thinking skills by having them critique AI outputs. But don't let them loose on AI - note age-level restrictions. 📔 Upper Secondary: Rather than police AI use, teach students about how AI works and its limitations, including the effects of bias, stereotypes, and inaccuracies. I am also curious how teachers feel about AI if you remove the student aspect - how many teachers find it valuable in their professional work from lesson planning, IEP and evaluation writing, or even curriculum adaptations?
