AGI is proud to present another design-build ground improvement project, Project Piper, carried out to support the tilt-up construction of an 855,000-square-foot warehouse structure in Troutdale, Oregon. As part of this project AGI designed and installed over 4,000 Deep Soil Mixing (DSM) columns up to 70 feet deep! The site presented several geotechnical challenges: ❌ Weak Soils: The subsurface consisted of artificial fill, soft silts and clays, and loose, liquefiable sands. These conditions could not adequately support the warehouse foundation and floor slab loads. ❌ Liquefaction Risk: The loose sands posed a significant risk of liquefaction during seismic events, potentially causing settlement and structural damage. ❌ Fast-Track Schedule: The project demanded a fast-track construction timeline, requiring efficiencies from all parties. AGI's solution offered several advantages for Project Piper: ✔️ Improved Bearing Capacity: The DSM columns significantly enhanced the soil's bearing capacity, allowing it to support the heavy loads. ✔️ Uniform Slab Support: The columns provided uniform support and increased subgrade modulus for the floor slab, limiting the differential settlement. ✔️ Reduced Static & Liquefaction Settlements: The DSM columns limited both static and liquefaction settlements. ✔️ Fast-Track Execution: AGI supplied increased resources, crews, and worked double shifts over 4 months to achieve the milestone deadlines for the client.
