Odisha’s Loss, Maharashtra’s Big Win! 😂 😖
In some surprising news today, JSW Group is moving its huge electric vehicle (EV) and battery project out of Odisha to Maharashtra.
The project was earlier planned to be set up in Paradip and Cuttack, but now it will be set up in Nagpur and Aurangabad.
But here’s what’s even more interesting – the size of the investment has gone up!
Just in February, JSW committed to investing 40,000 crore in Odisha. The plan was to:
- Build a 60,000-tonne lithium-ion refinery along with a 50GWh cell factory (licensed tech from a Chinese firm, name not disclosed).
- Set up a massive EV and hybrid vehicle manufacturing plant
But now, the same project has shifted to Maharashtra, with an even bigger commitment of Rs 52,000 crore! Here’s the breakdown:
- Rs 25,000 crore will go into setting up the lithium refinery and battery cell factory in Nagpur.
- Rs 27,200 crore will be invested in the EV manufacturing complex in Aurangabad.
It’s a huge loss for Odisha, and many are speculating that the change in the state government played a big role in this shift. Is this a sign that investors are losing confidence in Odisha?
But here’s where it gets a bit worrying.
Just months before announcing this EV investment, JSW had committed to Rs 75,000 crore for another major project in Odisha.
This includes what could be India’s largest single-location plant for steel and cement.
Land acquisition for this project is already done, so it’s still expected to move forward, but with JSW pulling out of the EV project, many are left wondering if the same might happen with this one.
If that happens, it could seriously hurt Odisha’s reputation as a business-friendly state.
Only time will tell if these changes are a one-off, or if we’re seeing a trend here.
Let’s hope for the best for Odisha, but for now, Maharashtra surely looks like the clear winner.
