As AI and engineering continue to advance globally, Africa is emerging as a key player in harnessing this technology to drive meaningful change. From smart infrastructure to renewable energy solutions, the possibilities are endless. One area I’m particularly passionate about is how AI can revolutionize agriculture and energy. In a continent where over 60% of the population relies on farming, integrating AI into precision agriculture can optimize yields, reduce waste, and improve food security. Coupled with solar energy innovations, we can create sustainable models for rural electrification, reducing the energy deficit in remote areas. During my time working on solar-powered smart bins and engaging with tech startups, I’ve seen firsthand how local solutions can address real-world challenges. The potential of AI in healthcare is equally transformative, allowing remote diagnostics and improving access to quality care in under-resourced regions. The future of Africa is bright, and it's driven by our ability to leverage cutting-edge technologies. Whether it's building smarter cities or deploying AI-driven systems, we have the talent and creativity to unlock Africa’s full potential. What are your thoughts on AI’s role in shaping Africa’s future? How do you see engineering innovations contributing to this journey? #AI #Engineering #Sustainability #AfricaTech #Innovation #RenewableEnergy #TechForGood

Congratulations galore to our #DFATBpp partnership between Gold Standard, International Rice Research Institute and the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade for launching a groundbreaking report that explores how AI has the potential to significantly enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of sustainable rice projects. The partnership, which aims to scale carbon market access for sustainable rice producers in Vietnam, engaged Mantle Labs, a leading UK-based remote sensing and AI technology company, to produce the report. Insights include: 🚀 Enhanced accuracy: AI and remote sensing technologies are setting new standards in monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV). The report highlights how these technologies can deliver orders of magnitude higher accuracy compared to traditional methods. 💡 Cost efficiency: by automating complex tasks like acreage verification, drainage practice analysis, and field stratification, AI significantly reduces costs and increases scalability for sustainable rice projects. 🌿 Real-world impact: the report featured a case study from Dong Thap Province in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta which demonstrated AI’s ability to streamline processes and achieve high accuracy, proving its transformative potential. 🇻🇳 Vietnam’s One Million Hectares program goes digital! Rice production offers the greatest potential to reduce our carbon footprint. Add in low-emission tech and digital tools, and the mitigation potential shoots up to 65%. During the recent consultations between IRRI and the Vietnam agri department, IRRI proposes adding Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (MRV)-supportive digital tools: 🌱 GHG computation engine (RiceGEM) 📊 data monitoring in commune scale (RiceMoRe) 💻 data monitoring in field scale (FarMoRe) 📈 rice growth and GHG simulation model (Oryza) All of these tools can help in achieving Vietnam's net-zero emissions by 2050. IRRI also signals the integration of remote sensing, machine learning, and artificial intelligence (AI) in the next phase of the program. To me, though not a rice expert but engaged in cereal-legume cropping system, crop diversification in rice-rice ecosystem, the priority lies in sustainable production system through judicious uses of natural resources, move towards aerobic rice and reduce dependency on chemical fertilisers and pesticides. This should substantially reduce methane, carbon footprints despite rice intensification program essential to ensure food security. My thoughts on the subject: Should IRRI-SARC India put emphasis on ecologically sustainable cereal production by introducing food legumes in rice-rice system, more so when India is highly deficient in pulses and edible oils, resorting to huge imports? https://lnkd.in/gt_25kSz The pertinent question: Should India opt for a change in policy or continue to do as usual at huge ecological cost? It may not be out of scope to mention and suggest transformation of rice crop to C4 photosynthetic pathways, that could increase productivity close to 50%, theoretically. 🌱 To foster sustainable agriculture, we must harness the speed of technological advancement. 🌐 Embracing innovative solutions has the first foot to elevate the agricultural landscape but also contribute to a more sustainable future. "In a world increasingly prone to natural disasters resulting from climate change, if Africa does not devise methods to adapt its agricultural processes to climate change, it will likely face 22% yield losses by 2050 further accentuating the existing problem of food security. The AU also estimates that hunger costs African countries between 1.9% and 16.5% of their GDP. One sector that demonstrates the immense potential for AI applicability in Africa is the agricultural sector." Denoted Dr. Youssef Travely, in the Next Einstein Forum. While we experience evolution in tech, we believe cracking the challenge of applying text data in local languages for interactive voice response for farmer education can boost interactions with digital tools.
