Some observations - pharma industry - 2023- 2024 ( I hate to put "Budget constraints" in this list and also downsizing / layoffs) 1) The rapid pace of digital transformation driven by the COVID-19 pandemic continued to transform the life sciences industry in 2023. 2) Pharma Business is shifting from reactive adoption to intentional integration of cutting-edge technologies throughout the value chain. 3) Increase in adoption of cloud-based systems and platforms to consolidate, analyze, and share data 4) Startups and smaller biotechs with leaner organizations and more agile processes are disrupting the market and setting new speed norms 5) Companies are more focused on increasing efficiency amidst increasing diverse regulatory requirements 6) Some progress and advancements in innovation Industry experts advice : Companies that strategically harness data-driven, digital capabilities will propel the industry into a more innovative, resilient, and patient-centric future

The biotech industry is witnessing a stark paradox in 2024. On one hand, there’s a group of biotech startups that are thriving, attracting nearly $3 billion in funding in Q1 2024 alone. Job openings in the sector are also also considerable in several parts of the U.S., especially in the Greater Boston area, which is also seeing a wave of cuts. On the other hand, the biotech sector is also experiencing a significant wave of layoffs. Major biotech and pharmaceutical firms like Amylyx Pharmaceuticals, Novartis, Genentech and Sanofi are among those affected. As Jonathan Norris, a managing director with HSBC Innovation Banking, noted in a January Wall Street Journal article, “It’s the have and have-nots right now in terms of access to capital.” Additionally, Kenvue, which spun out from Johnson & Johnson in 2023, has revealed plans to lay off about 4% of its workforce. Bristol Myers Squibb (BMS) also announced one of the largest workforce reductions of the year thus far, signaling plans to cut roughly 2,200 employees, or about 6% of its employee base. Meanwhile, Bayer is letting 1,500 workers go on top of a management shakeup.

Cutting R&D is not just about balancing the books; it's about the future of healthcare. R&D is not merely an expense; it's an investment in the future of healthcare that directly impacts millions of patients waiting for innovative treatments. When pharma companies reduce R&D spending, they risk delaying or losing the next breakthrough in treating cancer, rare diseases, or chronic conditions. Patients rely on these advancements to improve or even save their lives — cutting R&D means cutting hope for many who are depending on progress in medical science. Instead of following the traditional route of cutting R&D and resorting to layoffs, could the industry explore more creative solutions? Some ideas, which might not be feasible but are worth considering, include: - Temporary pay cuts across leadership or teams: Could this help retain talent and avoid layoffs while continuing to fund critical R&D? - Optimizing operational efficiency: What processes can be streamlined to reduce waste and improve productivity without sacrificing innovation? - Leaning on automation: Could AI and automation be leveraged to accelerate clinical trials and reduce overhead? - Reducing non-essential expenses: Are there areas like real estate, marketing, travel, or other non-critical operations that could be adjusted to prioritize R&D? These may not be the perfect answers, but it raises a question: why does the industry keep following the age-old path of cutting R&D and shedding talent? Shouldn’t we challenge ourselves to find more innovative, sustainable ways to thrive and continue delivering life-changing treatments to patients? What are your thoughts? Anything that is worth building requires a team of dedicated individuals, each bringing to the table unique skillsets and experience. The #healthcare industry is a massive complex. Filled with its own unique challenges. Be it: 1. Regulation 2. Technical 3. Commercial It is foolish to think that any one individual has what it takes to build and scale anything of impact without the help of others. It is said that you cannot build a #HealthTech company without a clinician. But I argue that you also can't do so without a strong technical and commercial team. While it is true that #clinicians can bring to the table: - Deep clinical insights - Entry into clinical settings - Regulation and compliance knowledge - A firm understanding of clinical pathways But, it takes a lot more than that to build and scale a product. You also need: - Technical skills to build, iterate and maintain the product. - Commercial understanding on how to sell to other businesses. - Fundraising, Legal, Marketing knowledge as part of venture building. To assume any one individual is able to do all the above is madness. Yes, you can technically do so, but likely badly. 😅 And not to the level you need to be a world class organisation. _____________________________________ I had 4 brilliant calls this weekend with technologists, clinicians and #innovators. (Ravi Nar, Liz Keen, Dr Claire Ashley, Vishnu Menon) We discussed the nuances and challenges of finding the right partners to collaborate with to build HealthTech products.
