🚴♂️ We are happy to share that for the first time in Lithuania, Gren Klaipėda bottom ash will be used to construct bike paths in Klaipėda. Arvydas Vaitkus, Mayor of Klaipėda city, commented: “This is a great example of the circular economy. I believe that in the near future, there will be a growing search for ways to find new uses for what seems to be no longer needed. In this case, we are ensuring secondary use by improving the infrastructure for cyclists, which is also very important for the city. We plan to complete the work on Sausio 15-osios Street in the first half of next year, and bike paths are also being built in other parts of the city.” Donatas Petronis, Manager of the Gren Klaipėda plant, says: “About 20-25% of the waste that comes to our plant leaves in the form of bottom ash. We not only treat non-hazardous waste that cannot be recycled and turn it into electricity and heat, but we also produce bottom ash, which is a proven and excellent material suitable for road construction, parking lot construction, tile production or other uses in the construction of various infrastructure objects. Transforming urban transport for a sustainable future in Finland! 🚆🌍 In Finland, urban light rail projects are pivotal in encouraging commuters to choose collective transport over cars. A prime example is the Jokeri Light Rail, a 25-kilometre line connecting Helsinki and Espoo. At Ramboll, we led a team of partners to deliver cost-efficient and biodiversity-preserving solutions for this transformative project. Inaugurated in October 2023, Jokeri Light Rail replaces the region's busiest bus line, with an expected daily ridership of 90,000 by 2030 - more than double today's numbers. This project, integral to Finland's net-zero ambitions, is set to reduce CO2 emissions by 85% and NO2 emissions by 95% compared to the bus line. It also promotes urban development, with new housing and workplaces along the route, supporting two million residents and over a million jobs by 2050. A recent site visit to Osijek, Croatia, unveiled the city's efforts to address urban mobility challenges as part of the OPTI-UP project's initiative to enhance public transport systems. 🚊🚧 During the visit, partners EY and GPP delved into discussions about optimizing bus lines to boost ridership during off-peak hours and fostering a culture of public transport among residents. 👉 At Osijek’s previous attempts for line optimization, feedback from passengers has led to a reversion to previous bus routes. Osijek's accessible parking services, with low rates and abundant free spaces, further encourage the use of private transport over public options. ✅ The site visit included a tour of the depot and maintenance facility, as well as the construction site of the EU-funded tram line modernization project, which spans 9.5 km. This ambitious project aims to increase public transport usage, enhance the city's development, and elevate the standard of living for Osijek's citizens. With the Mayor's welcome, the session opened up a dialogue on optimizing connections, embracing new technologies, and the potential for greener transport options like electric and hybrid vehicles. 🚍🏰 The picturesque town, known for its influx of tourists, faces unique challenges: from seasonal overcrowding to insufficient coverage in outskirts areas. The need for an integrated transport system is clear, as is the importance of balancing the city's historical charm with modern infrastructure demands. Despite these hurdles, Český Krumlov is committed to enhancing its public transport network, considering the diverse needs of residents and visitors alike. The discussion touched upon the importance of pedestrian and cycling transport, the potential for Park and Ride systems, and the integration of alternative fuels to reduce environmental impact. As the meeting wrapped up, the path forward for Český Krumlov includes tackling these challenges head-on, with a focus on creating a more accessible, efficient, and environmentally friendly transport system for all who call the city home or come to visit its storied streets. Mechelen rolls out first Hoppinpunten 🚀 #Hoppinpunten are hubs where many modes of transport converge. In MoLo Hubs the Stad Mechelen will combine these Hoppinpunten with logistics hubs by adding parcel boxes near the hub. 📦🏙️ In order to find a good balance between quality of life and accessibility, the city is committed to sustainable mobility. More than 30 government and local community representatives from 17 Philippine cities—Antipolo, Bacolod, Baguio, Butuan, Cagayan de Oro, Cebu, Davao, Dipolog, Himamaylan, Iloilo, Muntinlupa, Naga, Ormoc, Quezon, Tacloban, Tacurong, and Tagbilaran—pledged to work within their respective communities to gather data needed to build better infrastructure for walking and cycling. Meet & Match - a Great Step Towards the Amsterdam MoLo Hubs Pilot🚀 The City of Amsterdam hosts the pilot for integrating mobility hubs with hubs for service logistics. This means that spaces must be defined and car parking areas🅿️must be adapted in order to optimise its logistical use. At the end of June various providers of emission-free transport vehicles came together with potential users for a ‘Meet & Match’: Contractors from the construction industry, installation technology and other providers of equipment and technical services.🛠️ During the meeting the project leader Frank Ebbink also pointed out that there is still room in the pilot project for entrepreneurs who want to test alternative transport options in view of the introduction of the low emission zone.🌱 Susanne Balm from the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences🎓presented a calculation model to the public in which variables such as journey time, time spent ⏱️searching for a parking space and costs for the hub/cargo bike💰could be entered. Cargobikes play a key role in promoting sustainability and more efficient use of space within urban logistics. Replacing van trips with cargobikes frees up space in densely populated urban areas. This research analyzes space for cargobikes through the lens of three layers from the "day in the life of a cargobiker": (1) the type of user, (2) the steps in the journey of a cargo biker, and (3) the area typologies.
