We've been doing lots of work with drinks brands 2CV recently, it's fascinating to support brands in such a dynamic industry. Sustainability is on the radar for many, but from my experience many are still finding their feet of how to tackle this effectively, especially with so many competing priorities. As Caroline Bates from our Citizen Good arm says, it's become essential and corner stone of identity, and if brands are not delivering, they risk falling behind. Great to walk the Gastvrij Rotterdam show. Much smaller than some of the shows I have been to in the US, but a great show with quality vendors that is really inviting for good conversations and networking.
It is clear that sustainability and impact are major drivers here. Companies are born out of a desire to create impact, it's not an afterthought. Consumers demand it and it's great to see companies present that really embody the triple bottom line; Profit, People, Planet (and not necessarily in that order...).
I picked three companies that really stood out to me:
Brute Bonen - DELICIOUS coffee from beans grown in the forrest versus on large mono-culture farms. Each cup cup of coffee has a negative carbon footprint (that's a good thing!). Direct lines to the farmers ensure fair wages and knowing the source. Roasting is done in cycles and based on demand, so no waste and always fresh beans that go in bags made of FSC paper and nonGMO corn. And so on...
Bio Bakkerij De Trog - A Belgian artisanal bakery that has been around since 1970. Organic bread made of the best ingredients in a certified CO2 neutral business. They are passionate about their Sustainable Development Goals (SDG's) that are part of every facet of their business. This is clearly visible in their respect for the process, the environment and their people.
The Seaweed Company - A vertically integrated seaweed company that won the 2023 Sustainable Food Award in the Ingredient category. Seaweed not only reduces CO2 and increases biodiversity in the coastal systems, it also provides a healthy food option. Their SeaMeat can replace 25%of meat in applications such as burgers and sausages while maintaining structure, flavor and mouthfeel. That's a win-win!

Sustainable Winegrowing Australia (SWA) have recently released its latest Impact Report illustrating what’s involved in making sustainable wine and how eco-conscious consumers can shop with confidence by looking out for the SWA certified trust mark on bottle.
The good news for Aussies, as highlighted in the latest report, is the increasing availability of wines that display the SWA certified trust mark. This mark assures consumers that the vineyard and winery have met sustainability practices via an independent third-party audit and the bottle they are choosing is better for the environment and the planet.
As an Aussie wine company that firmly upholds our responsibility to the environment and one of the largest certified Sustainable Winegrowing Australia members (in terms of vineyard planted area), we have been thrilled to work with SWA on the recent report. The team at Duxton Vineyards are proud advocates for sustainable wine production – grape to glass - and seek to assist in reversing agriculture’s adverse contribution to Australia’s environment by applying regenerative farming practices to the land it operates on.

Started the weekend with a NewBrew. The beer of PUB, Singapore's National Water Agency 🍺As a Belgian, we put the bar for beer tasting quite high… However:
I love it. Great work PUB, great work.
Not just the taste. But also the story.
This beer is brewed from NEWater, Singapore’s own brand of ultra-clean, high-grade recycled water.
For the non water technologists: it is water that has been used before. Just like many plastics have been used before.
Recycling water is 100% technically possible, safe and already applied at large scale worldwide. It’s hard to believe for the wider audience. It’s not so hard to believe for water nerds. 🇸🇬🇺🇸Singapore and US, just naming two, are leaders in that space.
🇧🇪🇳🇦But did you know that Belgium is also a pioneer? Koksijde, Belgium and Windhoek, Namibia were the first in the world to recycle used water at large scale! The Torreele plant is in operation for 22 years…
I still remember how in Ghent in 2015 we had brewed a beer named ‘from Sewer to Brewer’ as a stunt at International Water Association‘s first Resource Recovery Congress we organised. Also this beer was 100% brewed using the high-purity water of the Belgian water recycling facility.
Haha, thinking back to it, communication is very very important and sensitive. The name or our beer was funny, but not good for wide adoption.
What I learned talking to people from Singapore and the US in the reuse space is to completely break the connection with wastewater in communication. And actually get rid of the word ‘wastewater’. Use ‘Used water’ instead, and turn it into ‘Reclaimed Water’ (US) or ‘NEWater’ (SG).
Just like with any technological adoption, including digitalisation, the barriers are human, and as a result political, not technological.
And may I do a market prediction? The reuse market in Europe 🇪🇺in the coming decade is going to significantly grow. To make ourselves climate resilient combined with further improving our environment.
I hope Belgium will again take up a leadership role in Europe, building on the experience. My bet is that also the Netherlands 🇳🇱 will be inspiring quite soon.
Combined with environmental regulation, we’re going to have multi multi billion investments in treatment in Europe. Interesting investment opportunities ahead… 💧
Cheers! 🍻

Following on from our first talk at the Spirit of Speyside festival this year, the folk over at Spey have put together a report titled "Building Better Whisky" which you can have a wee nosey at here ↙️
"The report, offers a comprehensive overview of the difficult and often conflicting challenges the whisky industry faces in its sustainability push. It highlights the difficult balance between maintaining traditional production methods and embracing environmentally friendly practices.
