The report that came out yesterday on the inquiry into the fresh produce industry highlights a universal truth: dilapidated infrastructure makes doing business costly. This is why many small scale producers fail. But instead of addressing government failure, the competition commission is accusing successful farmers of hogging the glory: Read my report here: https://lnkd.in/geSD4fdK

Today we released our NZX announcement for the financial year ended 30th June, 2024. Key results: ➢ Operating EBITDA2 of $44.2 million ➢ Net profit after tax (NPAT) of $3.1 million ➢ Revenue of $915.9 million ➢ No FY24 final dividend declared PGW Chair, Mr Garry Moore said “The agricultural sector continues to navigate persistently challenging market conditions and this volatility is reflected in PGW’s financial results. PGW’s Operating EBITDA of $44.2 million is back on the strong trading results of recent years and this is largely a product of the economic environment being felt across the sector. We often say that PGW prospers when our farmer and grower customers do well. Our customers have faced difficult conditions over the past year and consequently this has impacted our results." When Australia's mining industry took over the farmers' Country Party in 1975, my grandfather presented Sir Rupert Hamer, the Premier of Victoria, with a petition from farmers demanding he limit increases in water prices. Sir Rupert refused to bow to the petition. So Alan Wood, the Liberal Party member for Swan Hill crossed the floor and voted with the Australian Labor Party Opposition. Then, two years later, in 1977, dairy farmers invited a young Bob Hawke to speak at their annual event - see attached History of the Dairy Industry Association of Australia, top page 30. Bob Hawke's pivot to Australian farming families via the dairy industry led to farmers across Australia following the Australian dairy industry's lead, to such an extent that in 1983, Bob Hawke and Paul Keating beat Malcolm Fraser and John Howard to win government. For John Howard, that was devastating. Because it allowed Hawke/Keating to take the lead on the deregulation of the Australian economy, with Hawke becoming very popular and keeping John Howard from power for 23 long years. His bitterness was made all the more sharp by the fact that young Labour Party (UK) member Tony Blair modelled New Labour in the UK on Hawke/Keating's "Third Way" in Australia. This Wikipedia entry on the Third Way (https://lnkd.in/gstvZRyY) says "According to a former member of Blair's staff, Blair and the Labour Party learnt from and owes a debt to Bob Hawke's government in Australia in the 1980s on how to govern as a Third Way party." ==> So, now I'm understanding a lot more about John Howard's bitterness towards my grandfather specifically, and the Australian dairy industry in particular. It wasn't just that my grandfather and me, together with my ancestors, defended native title rights for Aboriginal tribes and kept him from power for 23 long years. It's that my grandfather set a ball in motion in 1975 that led to the rise of New Labour in the United Kingdom. And there also appears to be a connection with Bill Clinton's "peace and prosperity" economics of the 1990s. I note that despite the role I played in helping the success of the Good Friday Peace Agreement in 1998, by telling a BBC journalist and TV crew that "no-one knows what the IRA are fighting for anymore" and calling for everyone to come together", and being a living testament to the truth of my words because I was literally clueless about my own Fenian ancestors' past ... John Howard proceeded anyway to set me up for blackmail and extortion and to attack the livelihoods of Australian dairy farmers by stripping their water rights and by attacking the constitutional rights to freedom of tens of millions of Australians. Perhaps that's why Bill Clinton left Howard outside in the rain, waiting for him, in 1999? https://lnkd.in/gwFbemcD. Howard's bitterness and extremism made him a target for Soviet/Russian recruitment. And explains Gina Rinehart as the mining industry spokeperson for Australian farming families. https://lnkd.in/g4-Urzwh

Most people think about tax-loss harvesting in December, but with historically negative returns in the S&P 500 in September, you may want to reconsider the timing of your tax-loss harvesting strategy.
